Dune
A novel that jumps out from the sci-fi genre has to be Dune by Frank Herbert. Whether or not you have read much sci-fi books, there is a good chance that you heard about this novel. It is a sci-fi novel that has amazing world building and has resonated with many readers. Many critics consider this the best sci-fi book ever written.
Flowers for Algernon
A sci-fi novel that I was Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. What happens when a person with a low IQ becomes a genius? Keyes does a wonderful job, using journal entries as the format and it works brilliantly. We see Charlie’s state of mind and can see his intelligence increase through his entries.
What makes this novel interesting is that it was originally a pitch idea for a comic book. But Keyes realized that it was something so much more and decided to hold onto it. He wrote it as a short story and a couple of years later, released the novel that we have come to know and love.
Childhood’s End
One of the most popular authors of the sci-fi genre is Arthur C. Clarke and his novel Childhood’s End is a must read. In this novel, Clarke imagines an alien invasion and the end of humanity’s freedom. But they lose so much more as new ideas and inventions stop being created. I love Clarke’s take on an alien invasion and the plot twist is one for the ages.
The Three-Body Problem
I came across The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin. book because of the Netlfix show of the same name. And after watching the show, I knew I had to read the books, especially after finding out that the book was very different from the show. The show had a lot of potential but it felt like a drama near the end of the series.
And just as I expected, the novel was a lot better. The changes that made me hate the show were not in the books. Instead, we are given more information about the aliens and sets up the next book in the series. I am hooked and can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
Mickey7
The next novel that I was glad I chose at random was Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. The plot sounded interesting and I do love sci-fi novels with a fun twist. In this novel, Mickey7 was the 7th clone of Mickey and his data is transferred from one to the next, if Mickey backs up the data. But when the next clone is created while Mickey7 is still alive, it causes a lot of problems for both of them and the colony.
