Spoiler warning: This recap discusses the entire plot and ending of The Fifth Season. It stops where book one ends.

Damaya, Syenite, and Essun are the same orogene at three different points in her life. Damaya is the child taken to the Fulcrum, Syenite is the trained orogene sent on a mission with Alabaster, and Essun is the mother searching for her daughter as the Stillness breaks apart. By the time The Obelisk Gate begins, Essun has found Alabaster alive in Castrima, learned he opened the rift that started the current Fifth Season, and heard him ask about something called a moon. Her daughter Nassun is still missing.

In my review of The Fifth Season, I wrote about how overwhelming the book felt at first and how quickly I got hooked once the pieces began to fit. On a return to the story, the moment worth lingering over is the reunion in Castrima. Essun has just found someone who remembers the life she left behind, and he immediately asks her to help with the catastrophe she’s trying to survive.

Damaya learns what the Fulcrum calls protection

In the Stillness, a Fifth Season is a prolonged environmental disaster. Orogenes can sense and manipulate seismic activity, making them indispensable in a place where the ground can turn against a community at any moment. The empire of Sanze trains orogenes at the Fulcrum and puts them under the supervision of Guardians.

When Damaya’s family discovers her power, they isolate her in a barn. Schaffa, the Guardian who collects her, breaks her hand on the way to the Fulcrum to teach her a lesson about control. The scene tells you how to read every later moment of tenderness between them. Damaya has to rely on someone who can hurt her at will and expects her to understand that harm as care.

At the Fulcrum, Damaya meets Binof, a child from a powerful family who sneaks in to investigate a strange chamber. Keep Binof in mind. Years later, Essun meets the same person on the road under the name Tonkee. That smaller identity reveal ties Damaya’s school years to Essun’s search and gives Tonkee’s curiosity about the obelisks a history.

Syenite and Alabaster see what keeps the Stillness stable

Syenite has earned four rings by the time the Fulcrum sends her to clear the harbor at Allia with Alabaster, a ten-ring orogene. Their superiors also expect them to conceive a child together. The assignment shows how far the Fulcrum’s authority reaches into their lives, even for someone as powerful as Alabaster.

On the journey, Alabaster shows Syenite what happens at a node station. The empire uses orogene children as living instruments to suppress earthquakes. The child they find there is dead, and Alabaster recognizes him as one of his children. Remember that encounter when the Guardians come for Corundum. Syenite has already seen what the empire can do to a child it takes into custody.

At Allia, Syenite raises a damaged obelisk from the harbor. The obelisks are enormous floating structures, and her ability to connect with them gives her access to power far beyond anything the harbor assignment calls for. When a Guardian attacks, her connection to the obelisk ends in a catastrophe that devastates Allia. Syenite and Alabaster survive and reach Meov, an island community outside the Fulcrum’s control.

Meov gives Syenite a home, and the Guardians take it away

On Meov, Syenite and Alabaster build a life with Innon, an orogene who grew up outside the Fulcrum. They raise Syenite and Alabaster’s son Corundum, called Coru. Seeing Innon live openly helps explain what the island offers Syenite. For a time she can imagine her child growing up in a community that knows what he is.

When the Guardians attack, Innon is killed and the stone eater Antimony pulls Alabaster away. Schaffa reaches Syenite and wants to take Coru. Syenite smothers her son to keep him from the Fulcrum, then unleashes the power of an obelisk against the attackers. She survives and eventually starts over as Essun.

The reunion at Castrima makes clear that Alabaster has spent years carrying his own grief over Coru. He understands why Syenite made that choice and tells her he cannot forgive her for it. That conversation belongs beside the moon reveal. The two people who may have to work together again share a loss they remember from very different positions. Chapter 22and chapter 23 are the chapters to revisit if you want those scenes fresh before the sequel.

Essun leaves Tirimo to find Nassun

The book opens in Essun’s present with two disasters. Alabaster tears open the Stillness at Yumenes, beginning a new Fifth Season. In Tirimo, Essun finds her young son Uche dead. Her husband Jija killed him after discovering he was an orogene and has left with their daughter, Nassun.

Nassun is also an orogene. Essun has tried to teach her to control and hide her power, drawing on methods she learned growing up under Schaffa. The Fulcrum years give those lessons a different weight. Essun knows what exposure can cost her daughter, and much of what she knows about teaching a child comes from the institution that hurt her.

On the road, Essun travels with Tonkee and Hoa, who looks like a boy and turns out to be a stone eater. They reach Castrima, an underground community led by the orogene Ykka. Its residents include orogenes living openly, which makes Castrima an especially striking place for Essun to stop after years of concealment. Nassun is still somewhere beyond it.

What does Alabaster reveal at the end of The Fifth Season?

In Castrima’s infirmary, Essun finds Alabaster alive, with parts of his body turning to stone. Antimony is with him, and Hoa follows Essun. The encounter puts two stone eaters in the same room and makes their separate allegiances plain. Hoa is there for Essun. Antimony is there for Alabaster.

Alabaster confirms that he opened the rift at Yumenes using the power of the obelisks. Essun assumes he wants her help closing it. He wants her to make it worse. Then he asks whether she has ever heard of a moon. The novel leaves the mechanics and purpose of his plan for later. Going into the sequel, the thing to remember is that he brings up the moon when he asks Essun to do something with the rift.

There’s also a reason Essun’s chapters feel different from Damaya’s and Syenite’s. The younger versions of her are described in the third person, while Essun’s chapters address her as “you.” Once the timelines converge, it’s worth carrying a question into the sequel. Who gets to tell Essun’s story, and why are they telling it to her? Jemisin discusses the trilogy’s use of second person in her Lightspeed interview.

What to remember before opening The Obelisk Gate

  • Essun has lost two sons. Corundum died on Meov by her hand. Uche was killed by Jija in Tirimo. Nassun, her surviving child, is still missing.
  • Schaffa links Damaya’s training to the attack on Meov. The Guardian who raised Damaya under the Fulcrum’s rules is the same man who came for her son.
  • Castrima brings Essun and Alabaster back together. It gives Essun shelter, an orogene-led community, and a reason to reckon with the rift while her search for Nassun remains unfinished.
  • The obelisks can amplify an orogene’s reach. Syenite’s experience at Allia and Meov gives you a way to understand why Alabaster seeks out Essun for what comes next.
  • Alabaster caused this Season. His request to worsen the rift and his question about the moon are the two pieces of the final conversation to keep in mind.
