Spoiler warning. This recap reveals the ending of Six of Crows. It stops where the first book ends.
Kaz Brekker’s crew breaks into Fjerda’s Ice Court and comes home with Kuwei Yul-Bo, the son of the scientist who invented jurda parem. Then the man who hired them takes their money and kidnaps Inej. Nina is in withdrawal after taking the drug to save the crew, and the boy Jan Van Eck thinks he’s buying is actually his own son in disguise. That’s where Leigh Bardugo leaves the Crows before Crooked Kingdom.
If the tank chase is the part you remember best, the exchange back in Ketterdam is the scene worth revisiting. It explains why Van Eck needs Kuwei alive, why Kaz can’t simply walk away, and why the crew starts the second book with its biggest payday already gone.
Why Van Eck hires Kaz to break into the Ice Court
Jan Van Eck, a wealthy Kerch merchant, offers Kaz 30 million kruge to extract a Shu scientist named Bo Yul-Bayur from the Ice Court, a fortress in Fjerda. Bo invented jurda parem, a drug that magnifies the powers of the Grisha, the people in Bardugo’s world who can manipulate matter and living bodies. Van Eck claims he’s acting for the Merchant Council and wants to keep the drug from becoming a weapon.
The opening chapter shows what that weapon could look like. Anya, a Grisha Healer given parem during an experiment in Ketterdam, can make people obey her commands. The boost comes at a devastating cost. Parem causes intense dependence and can kill its users. Control of the supply would give a government or a merchant power over the people it doses, as well as over anyone their amplified abilities can reach.
Kaz brings together Inej Ghafa, the acrobat and spy known as the Wraith, and Jesper Fahey, the Dregs’ sharpshooter. Nina Zenik joins as the crew’s Heartrender. They break Matthias Helvar out of Hellgate because the former Fjerdan drüskelle knows the Ice Court from the inside. Kaz also recruits Wylan, a runaway with a talent for demolitions. Wylan’s surname is Van Eck, and Kaz figures the merchant’s son will give him leverage if the deal goes bad.
What happens inside the Ice Court?
The Crows enter the fortress disguised as prisoners during Hringkälla, a Fjerdan festival. Two skills matter as soon as the cell doors close. Jesper reveals he’s a Grisha Fabrikator and makes lockpicks from the metal in the bars. Inej climbs a hot incinerator shaft and lowers a rope so the crew can reach the roof.
The climb also changes what Inej wants from the job. Taken from her family and sold to the Menagerie in Ketterdam, she decides to use her share to buy a ship and hunt slavers. It’s the clearest picture she’s had of a life she can choose for herself. Later, when Kaz asks her to stay in Ketterdam, that future is already taking shape.
Inside the fortress, Kaz finds Pekka Rollins locked up. Van Eck sent Pekka after the same target, and Pekka’s attempt failed. Kaz lets him out. The history between them goes back to Kaz’s childhood, when Pekka swindled Kaz and his brother Jordie. Jordie later died of firepox. Kaz survived by floating on his brother’s body after he was taken for dead, and the experience left him struggling with skin-to-skin contact. His gloves and his grudge against Pekka both carry that history.
Matthias chooses Nina, and the crew finds Kuwei
Nina and Matthias enter the Ice Court with an agreement of their own. After seeing what parem does in the field, they plan to kill Bo and keep the formula from spreading. Their alliance takes some doing. Matthias once captured Nina while serving as a drüskelle, one of Fjerda’s Grisha hunters. The two grew close after surviving a shipwreck. Later, Nina falsely accused Matthias of being a slaver to keep him from being killed by other Grisha, and the accusation landed him in Hellgate.
At the Ice Court, Matthias’s old commander, Jarl Brum, locks Nina in a cell. Matthias appears to side with Brum before turning on him and freeing her. The pair discover that Bo is already dead. His teenage son, Kuwei Yul-Bo, is alive and has been forced to continue his father’s work. They spare Kuwei and bring him out. The crew now has a young Grisha to protect and a client expecting delivery.
Nina takes jurda parem to get everyone out
Jesper, Wylan and Inej escape the fortress in a stolen Fjerdan tank. The crew reunites, but the tank only gets them so far. Fjerdan forces cut off their escape, and Nina takes jurda parem to overpower them long enough for the others to get away.
On the voyage home, her enhanced abilities let her alter Wylan’s appearance so he looks like Kuwei. Then the withdrawal hits. Matthias stays by her side as she struggles through it. The disguise and Nina’s illness come from the same decision at the harbor, and both shape what happens when the Crows return to Ketterdam.
How does Six of Crows end?
Van Eck meets the crew on an island near Ketterdam. Once Kaz hands over the boy who appears to be Kuwei, Van Eck reveals that the Merchant Council never authorized the job. He wants jurda parem for himself and has Grisha already under its influence ready to attack the crew. They destroy Kaz’s ship even after Kaz tells Van Eck that Wylan is supposedly aboard. Van Eck dismisses the son he considers unfit to inherit because Wylan can’t read.
That’s when the disguise pays off. Wylan is the boy standing with Van Eck. The real Kuwei is still in Kaz’s hands. The exchange exposes how badly Kaz misjudged Wylan’s value as a bargaining chip. Van Eck is willing to sacrifice his own son, but he notices Kaz glance at Inej and realizes whom Kaz can’t afford to lose.
Van Eck takes Inej and the money. He gives Kaz one week to hand over the real Kuwei. In the final chapter, Kaz raises cash by selling his interests in the Crow Club and Fifth Harbor to Pekka Rollins, the man he still intends to punish for what happened to Jordie.
Where the six Crows stand before Crooked Kingdom
| Crow | What to remember going into book two |
|---|---|
| Kaz Brekker | He needs to recover Inej, keep Kuwei away from Van Eck and find a way to collect the money. His deal with Pekka gives him cash while putting part of his business in his rival’s hands. |
| Inej Ghafa | Van Eck is holding her hostage. She wants her own ship and a life hunting slavers, and she has asked Kaz for a relationship in which he can let her in. |
| Jesper Fahey | His gambling debts remain unresolved. The heist has also exposed his hidden talent as a Fabrikator. He and Wylan have grown closer through the job. |
| Wylan Van Eck | He still looks like Kuwei. He’s heard his father write him off and now knows Van Eck was willing to destroy the ship with him supposedly aboard. |
| Nina Zenik | She’s alive and in severe withdrawal from parem. The crew escaped because she took it, and her recovery is still uncertain. |
| Matthias Helvar | He has turned against Brum, chosen to protect Nina and helped spare Kuwei. He stays with Nina through withdrawal. |
Keep the two boys straight when you start Crooked Kingdom. Wylan is the merchant’s son wearing Kuwei’s face. Kuwei is the scientist’s son whose knowledge makes him valuable. Van Eck has Inej and the money, and Kaz has one week before the deadline. The Ice Court job is over. The fight over who gets to walk away from it is still going.
