Why Rainbow Rowell published Corinne as Rebecca Morrow
Rowell wrote Corinne during the pandemic. The novel drew on feelings about faith, shame and sexuality that she found difficult to discuss publicly. She also wondered how readers who knew her for queer YA fantasy would respond to a book that felt so far from what she had been publishing. Using a pen name gave her a way to put the story into the world while keeping that part of her writing life private.
When St. Martin’s Press released Corinne on July 12, 2022, the author bio identified Rebecca Morrow only as the pen name of a bestselling author. In her essay, Rowell said Corinne had become her favorite of her books. As time passed, the privacy she had wanted began to get in the way of something she wanted more: a chance to talk about Corinne and Enoch and share their story with the readers who already knew her work.
What is Corinne about?
Corinne Callahan is cast out of the fundamentalist church that raised her and cut off from her family. She builds a life outside the church, but years later she moves back to her hometown hoping to be welcomed into her mother’s home again. There she runs into Enoch Miller, the deacon’s son and the boy she once risked everything for.
That return gives the book its sharpest tension. Corinne has already proved she can make a life away from home. What she still wants is something she can’t give herself: a place at her family’s table. Seeing Enoch again brings those two lives into contact, and the question becomes how much of the life she’s built she is willing to risk for a chance to belong again. Rowell describes the characters as fictional and says that although their love is central to the story, she sees the book outside the romance genre.
