A brain implant promises a better life. Then it malfunctions, leaving the people who trusted it dead or dangerously changed. That is the nightmare behind Reapers, Anthony Ryan’s forthcoming post-apocalyptic thriller, scheduled for November 3, 2026.
Published by Blackstone in the United States and Canada and under Ryan’s A. J. Ryan pen name through Orbit UK, the novel puts a former convict at the center of a society struggling with the aftermath of technological catastrophe.
For readers drawn to science fiction that makes progress feel unsettling, the hook is immediate: what happens when the technology built into people becomes the thing everyone else fears?
What Is Reapers About?
In the novel’s fictional world, neural implants offered extraordinary benefits. Orbit’s description identifies the technology as Cortexia’s implant, sold with the promise of eliminating stress, anxiety, and depression. Its widespread adoption made the eventual failure devastating.
Then came the Glitch. Implant users died or experienced catastrophic changes, with some becoming unresponsive and others violently dangerous. The survivors without implants were left to navigate the wreckage. Source: Orbit
This is an especially disturbing foundation for an apocalypse because the threat begins inside a product people wanted. The premise invites a question about dependence: how much control do people surrender when an improvement becomes something they carry inside their own bodies?
That is an interpretation of the setup, rather than a claim about the novel’s eventual answers. The appeal lies in the uncomfortable possibilities it opens.
Dalton Has to Collect Implants to Earn His Freedom
Blackstone’s synopsis places the story five years after the disaster. Dalton, a former convict now working as a Contracted Collection Agent, enters an abandoned city called the Sector. His route out depends on collecting enough implants to meet a quota.
He was once part of a team. Now he is alone, increasingly strained, and focused on surviving long enough to finish the job.
The quota gives this survival story a particularly harsh pressure point. Safety is something Dalton must earn through dangerous work. Every implant becomes a step toward escape, but the job also keeps him inside the place he wants to leave.
For me, that is the most compelling element of the announced premise. An abandoned city supplies the danger; a conditional promise of freedom supplies a reason to keep walking into it.
The Glitched Begin to Change
Dalton’s situation becomes more complicated when the people left inside the Sector begin behaving differently. They show signs of greater awareness and start moving together. Unexplained markings appear, and his remote handler directs him to investigate.
Those developments introduce a mystery beyond the practical question of how to survive. If Dalton’s understanding of the Glitched is incomplete, the rules guiding his work may be incomplete too.
The setup encourages readers to watch for the difference between what a survivor has been told and what he can actually observe. That tension offers a strong reason to follow the investigation without needing the book’s central secret spoiled in advance.
Anthony Ryan or A. J. Ryan? Both Names Refer to the Same Author
Readers may encounter different author names while shopping for Reapers. The North American edition is credited to Anthony Ryan; the UK edition uses A. J. Ryan.
Ryan describes the book as a post-apocalyptic thriller/horror novel. In his UK cover announcement, he also points readers interested in that side of his writing toward Red River Seven and The Feeding.
If you know Ryan through his fantasy, the change in genre is useful context before picking this one up. The announced premise centers on failed technology, dangerous recovery work, and an investigation inside a devastated city.
When Does Reapers Come Out?
Reapers is scheduled for November 3, 2026, in both the US and UK. Blackstone lists Steven Brand as the audiobook narrator. Check the specific format when ordering, since the publisher’s catalog includes different dates across editions.
Readers who enjoy technological horror, compromised protagonists, and survival stories built around an unfolding mystery have a clear reason to investigate. The question that makes Reapers intriguing is how Dalton’s pursuit of freedom will change once he starts questioning the world around him.
This is a spoiler-light preview based on the author’s announcements and publisher descriptions, rather than a review of the completed novel.
