Catapult Book Group ended operations on October 30, according to Publishers Weekly, leaving readers and authors awaiting answers about its forthcoming books. The publisher’s spring 2027 list includes 16 new titles, but the reporting reviewed does not establish which will proceed as announced, change publishers, or receive revised publication dates.

The most useful distinction for readers is between an announced book and a confirmed plan for publishing it after the closure. Catapult’s catalog documents the former. It does not settle the latter.

What happened to Catapult?

Publishers Weekly reported on October 21 that Catapult was being sold in an assets-only transaction, citing the Catapult Workers Collective. The union said employees had been told they would not continue working for the prospective buyer.

The group includes Catapult, Counterpoint Press, Soft Skull Press, and Hawthorne Books. Those names matter when checking a reading list: the uncertainty extends beyond books bearing the Catapult imprint.

The closure and the sale are separate developments

The October 30 Publishers Weekly update reported that operations were ending and that the union had reached a separation agreement. However, it described completion of the sale as potentially several weeks away.

The union told the publication it did not know the buyer’s identity. Catapult management could not immediately be reached for comment.

That leaves a significant reporting gap. An end to the existing operation does not, by itself, tell readers what a future owner will publish.

Which upcoming books were already announced?

Catapult’s official spring 2027 catalog covers January through April. Examples include the following books:

BookAuthorImprintDate listed in the catalog
The River Drowns the Able SwimmerXujun EberleinCatapultJanuary 12, 2027
Island of the Bird-FolkKiyoko Murata, translated by Juliet Winters CarpenterCounterpoint PressJanuary 19, 2027
Birds of WarNatashia DeónCounterpoint PressFebruary 2, 2027

These are previously announced catalog dates, not fresh confirmations following the closure.

The selection also shows why this story reaches different kinds of readers. Eberlein’s memoir follows three generations of women against China’s changing history. Murata’s novel centers on two elderly women remaining on a remote island. Deón’s historical novel draws on Black military history surrounding World War II.

What remains unclear about the books?

The reporting reviewed does not provide a title-by-title plan for the spring list. Readers still need answers to three practical questions:

  • Who will publish each book? An identified buyer and a statement about individual titles would clarify responsibility.
  • Will the listed dates hold? A catalog records an announcement; readers need a subsequent update to know whether that schedule remains in place.
  • What happens to existing preorders? Readers need information from the retailer handling their order, especially if a listing changes.

Publishers Weekly reported on October 30 that the spring titles remained available for preorder on the imprints’ websites. That availability should not be read as a guarantee of unchanged publication plans.

Likewise, uncertainty should not be reported as cancellation. The evidence reviewed does not support a blanket claim that all 16 books have been canceled.

What should readers do now?

If you have already preordered a forthcoming title, keep your order confirmation and watch for messages from your bookseller. For an order-specific answer, contact that retailer rather than assuming a general publishing-news report describes your purchase.

Follow the author’s official channels as well. A book-specific announcement will be more useful than speculation about the entire list.

For Books of Brilliance readers, the next meaningful update will be concrete: a named buyer, a confirmed publishing arrangement, or an author’s announcement about a particular book. Until then, the announced spring list remains a record of what was planned, with its next steps unresolved.
