Start Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series with Still Life, then follow publication order. As of October 31, 2026, the series contains 21 full-length novels, ending with Miss Wolcott’s Ghost, plus the optional novella The Hangman.

That might sound like a substantial commitment, but you do not need to buy the entire series to begin. Start with the first novel and decide whether you want to spend more time with Gamache and the residents of Three Pines.

For Books of Brilliance, publication order is the strongest recommendation because this is a series with two attractions: the investigation in front of you and the relationships that develop across the books. A later mystery may make sense on its own, but knowing the characters gives their decisions more weight.

Which Louise Penny book should you read first?

Still Life introduces Chief Inspector Armand Gamache through an investigation in Three Pines, a fictional Quebec village. The death of local artist Jane Neal brings Gamache and his colleagues into a community whose peaceful appearance conceals much more complicated lives.

It is a useful introduction because readers discover the village alongside the investigators. You meet the people before their histories become a major part of later installments.

The appeal is not simply finding a murderer. It is watching a patient investigator pay attention to what people reveal, what they conceal, and what their neighbors misunderstand about them.

Our recommendation: Borrow or buy the first book before committing to a boxed set. If the combination of investigation and community appeals to you, continue with book two.

Do you have to read the Gamache books in order?

Louise Penny explains in her official FAQ that readers can understand individual books without reading every earlier installment. However, she recommends reading in order because character development continues across the series.

That distinction matters. Understanding the current investigation is different from experiencing a character’s changing loyalties, friendships, and professional difficulties as they unfold.

For a first read, follow the numbered list. If you have already enjoyed a later installment, return to the beginning rather than worrying that you started incorrectly.

One particularly important pairing is The Grey Wolf followed by The Black Wolf. The latter directly continues the former, making this an especially poor place to reverse the order.

Why do some Louise Penny books have different titles?

Two early novels have alternate titles that can make a shopping list look longer than it should.

Title used in this guideAlternate titleSeries position
A Fatal GraceDead ColdBook 2
A Rule Against MurderThe Murder StoneBook 4

These are the same novels under different titles, rather than additional installments. You may also encounter The Cruellest Month, a spelling variant of The Cruelest Month.

Before buying a secondhand copy or a collection, compare the series position as well as the title. This is particularly helpful when mixing editions from different countries.

Where does The Hangman fit?

The Hangman is a short Gamache novella originally published in 2010. Penny’s official website explains its connection to adult literacy and its intentionally accessible reading level.

If you want to include it, place it after Bury Your Dead and before A Trick of the Light. It is commonly listed as book 6.5.

Treat it as an optional extra. It does not replace book seven, and its presence is why some reading lists contain more entries than the count of full-length novels.

What is the latest Inspector Gamache book?

As of October 31, 2026, the latest published Gamache novel is Miss Wolcott’s Ghost, book 21. It follows The Black Wolf and is already available.

For a spoiler-light introduction to its premise and series placement, read our guide to Miss Wolcott’s Ghost.

New readers can use that guide to see what the latest installment offers, but our recommended starting point remains the first novel.

Are all Louise Penny novels Inspector Gamache books?

No. Her coauthored political thrillers sit outside the Gamache reading order:

Neither needs to be inserted between the numbered mysteries. Read them separately whenever their premises interest you.

Is Inspector Gamache a cozy mystery series?

The village setting, familiar residents, and emphasis on community make the series appealing to many cozy mystery readers. However, newcomers should leave room for darker material and the police investigation at the center of the books.

Our advice is to approach Gamache as a character-focused crime series with a strong sense of place. That sets a more useful expectation than assuming that an inviting village guarantees a gentle mystery.

Where should you start with Inspector Gamache?

Start with Still Life and let that first visit to Three Pines determine whether you want to return. Continue in publication order, add the novella if you want a shorter detour, and check alternate titles before buying duplicate copies.

You do not need to think of the series as 21 books you must finish. Begin with one investigation, one village, and the possibility of finding characters you want to follow.
