FanFiction.Net, Wattpad, Quotev and Tumblr are places to look for fanfiction while AO3 is down. If you want to continue a particular story, start with the author’s other official profiles: they may have posted it elsewhere. If you already downloaded the story, you may be able to keep reading without accessing AO3 at all.
The useful distinction is between finding something new to read and finding the exact fic you were reading. Another platform can help with the first. The second depends on whether the author cross-posted the work or you saved a copy earlier.
Status checked October 30, 2026: The official OTW status page reports that AO3 remains offline following a security incident. OTW says no AO3 data has been deleted, including works and bookmarks. Its current estimate is a minimum of two weeks of downtime, potentially up to four weeks; this is an estimate, not a confirmed return date. For the incident timeline, see our AO3 outage report.
Where should you look first?
| Option | Useful starting point for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| FanFiction.Net | Browsing stories organized around an existing fandom | Content rules and search tools differ from AO3 |
| Wattpad | Discovering fanfiction alongside original serialized stories | Its catalog and reading experience differ from AO3 |
| Quotev | Browsing fanfiction by category, tags and story listings | Your preferred fandom or pairing may have fewer options |
| Tumblr | Finding writers, short fiction and links to author-posted work | A recommendation may lead back to an unavailable AO3 page |
| An author’s own website or linked profile | Finding an authorized cross-post of a particular fic | The author may publish exclusively on AO3 |
| Files you already downloaded | Continuing a saved story offline | Your copy includes only the chapters saved at the time |
These are editorial suggestions based on how each option works. They are independent destinations, not replacement copies of AO3’s archive.
1. FanFiction.Net: Start with your fandom
FanFiction.Net is a practical starting point if you want to browse stories based on books, anime, games, films or television. Its homepage organizes fanfiction and crossovers into these categories, giving readers a direct route to a familiar fictional world.
Start with the fandom, then look for a premise that interests you. If you are searching for a particular AO3 author, try their username as well—but check identifying details before assuming a matching name belongs to the same person.
One important difference is content policy. FanFiction.Net’s guidelines say the site does not accept explicit MA-rated content. Readers should not expect every kind of work they read on AO3 to have an equivalent there.
My recommendation: Try it when staying in the same fandom matters more than finding the same fic.
2. Wattpad: Explore a different storytelling community
Wattpad includes fanfiction alongside original fiction. Wattpad’s own app description lists fanfiction among its reading categories and highlights features such as reading lists and comments within stories.
Search for your fandom, character names or a writer you already follow. Read the description carefully: a familiar trope or title does not necessarily mean you have found a cross-post of an AO3 work.
Wattpad also offers a paid Premium subscription for ad-free reading. Check the access conditions shown for the story and app features you want rather than assuming every part of the experience is free.
My recommendation: Choose it when you are open to discovering a different author or reading style, including original fiction between fanfiction updates.
3. Quotev: Browse its dedicated fanfiction section
Quotev’s fanfiction section provides a search field, category choices and sorting options including new and popular listings. Story entries can display tags, page counts and completion information.
Those details offer a useful way to decide what to open. Look for the characters or fandom you want, then check whether the story is complete if you would prefer a finished read.
Do not assume a tag or rating means exactly what it means on AO3. Read each story’s description and any warnings supplied by its author.
My recommendation: Try Quotev when you want another browsable collection of fanfiction rather than a feed of recommendations.
4. Tumblr: Follow the writer and check the destination
Tumblr can help you locate writers’ posts, fiction and reading recommendations. Its search and tag tools let you explore a topic or look for a specific account.
Try a fandom name with “fanfiction,” a pairing name, or an author’s username. On a writer’s blog, look for a pinned post or masterlist that organizes their work.
The key question is where the story actually lives. A Tumblr post may contain readable fiction, but it may also be a preview or recommendation linking to AO3. The latter will not restore access during an outage.
My recommendation: Use Tumblr to follow an author’s own links and updates, especially when searching for a particular work.
How to find the exact AO3 story you were reading
Before searching broadly, gather what you remember: the title, author’s username, fandom and an original work link if you have one.
Then try:
- Search the exact title in quotation marks with the author’s name.
- Check the writer’s known social profiles or personal website.
- Follow links the author provides to other platforms.
- Compare the title, summary and chapter count before continuing.
A cross-post may be incomplete or updated on a different schedule. Save your chapter number or a brief note about your reading position before switching copies.
If you cannot find an author-posted version, waiting may be the only way to continue that particular work. Avoid uploading someone else’s downloaded fic publicly without their permission.
Already downloaded a fic? You may be able to keep reading
Check your device’s Downloads folder, ebook library or saved documents for an EPUB, PDF or other story file. A local copy can remain readable while the website is unavailable.
An AO3 bookmark or a link saved in your browser does not, by itself, give you an offline copy. You need the story’s actual text saved on your device.
For device-specific instructions, follow our guide to reading downloaded AO3 stories on Kindle, phone or tablet.
Do AO3 apps or mirror sites solve the outage?
Be cautious about any service claiming to unlock the unavailable archive. OTW says AO3 has no official app; third-party apps commonly act as specialized browsers. An app that relies on AO3 being online cannot be assumed to bypass the outage.
An unrelated reading service does not need your AO3 password. Use a separate password when creating another account. OTW also recommends changing passwords on other sites where you reused your AO3 password as a precaution following the incident.
For a new story, I would begin with FanFiction.Net’s fandom categories or Quotev’s fanfiction listings. For the story you already love, the best lead is the writer’s own links or the copy you saved before the outage.
