You can read downloaded AO3 stories on a Kindle, phone or tablet without keeping the AO3 website open. For most readers, EPUB is the simplest starting point: send it through Amazon’s Send to Kindle service for a Kindle, open it in Apple Books on an iPhone or iPad, or import it into Google Play Books on Android.
If you already have a PDF, you can read that too. Before choosing a method, check the file extension at the end of the filename.
Availability note — October 29, 2026: AO3’s official status page reports an ongoing outage. The instructions below work with files you already saved; downloading a new copy from AO3 depends on the site being available. Check the official OTW status page for updates.
Choose the right method for your device
| Device or app | Suggested file | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle e-reader | EPUB | Upload through Send to Kindle, then download on the Kindle |
| Kindle app on a phone or tablet | EPUB | Use Send to Kindle with the same Amazon account |
| iPhone or iPad using Apple Books | EPUB | Find the file in Files and share it to Books |
| Android phone or tablet | EPUB | Open or upload it with Google Play Books |
| Device with a PDF reader | Open the saved PDF in your reader | |
| Device with a web browser | HTML | Open the saved file; check that the story text is present |
Our recommendation: Start with EPUB when you have a choice. Its adjustable text is usually more comfortable on small screens than a fixed PDF page.
How to read downloaded AO3 stories on Kindle
Use Amazon’s Send to Kindle for the most straightforward EPUB workflow.
- Locate the downloaded EPUB on your phone, tablet or computer.
- Open Send to Kindle in your browser and sign in to the Amazon account used by your Kindle.
- Select the EPUB file.
- Turn on Add to your library if you want it available across devices linked to that account.
- Submit the file and allow time for processing.
- Connect your Kindle to the internet, sync it and find the story in your library.
- Download and open the story before going offline.
Amazon accepts EPUB through Send to Kindle and processes it for Kindle reading. Simply copying an EPUB onto an e-reader by USB is a different process and should not be treated as equivalent.
If the story does not appear, confirm that you used the right account and check whether a library filter is hiding personal documents.
What if you already have an AZW3 or MOBI file?
AZW3 is an alternative for compatible Kindle e-readers using a USB transfer. The connection method varies by model and computer; follow Amazon’s USB transfer guidance.
For a fresh Send to Kindle upload, choose EPUB rather than an older MOBI download. Renaming a file from .mobi to .epub does not convert its contents.
How to read AO3 EPUB files on iPhone or iPad
Apple Books is a convenient option if you want to read on an Apple device.
- Open the Files app.
- Find the story in Downloads, On My iPhone, On My iPad or iCloud Drive.
- If a cloud icon appears, download the file first.
- Touch and hold the EPUB and select Share.
- Choose Books. You may need to scroll through the apps or select More.
- Open the imported story in Books and adjust the text size to suit you.
Depending on your software and default apps, tapping the EPUB may open Books directly.
If Books is missing from the sharing options, confirm that the app is installed. Readers who prefer the Kindle app can use the Send to Kindle method above instead.
How to read downloaded AO3 stories on Android
Google Play Books supports EPUB and PDF imports.
- Find the downloaded story in your Files or Downloads app.
- Open the file’s menu and choose Open with, Play Books or Upload to Play Books, depending on the options displayed.
- Allow the import to finish.
- Open Google Play Books → Library → Uploads.
- Select the story and make it available offline before disconnecting.
For PDF uploads, Google’s instructions say to enable PDF uploading in Play Books settings. That setting is not required for EPUB.
If your phone does not offer Play Books in the file menu, upload the EPUB through your Play Books library on a computer, using the same Google account.
A compatible local EPUB reader is another option if you prefer to keep the file on your device rather than upload it.
Can you read an AO3 PDF instead?
Yes. Open the downloaded PDF in a compatible document reader.
PDF is useful when you already have a copy and want to start reading immediately. On a small phone, however, you may need to zoom or move around the page. EPUB is generally the better choice when adjustable font size is your priority.
For an HTML download, try opening the file in your browser. Check that it contains the actual story rather than a saved login, warning or error page.
How to check that your story will work offline
Seeing a title in an app does not always mean its contents have finished downloading.
Before a flight, commute or other time without service:
- Open the story while connected.
- Let its download finish.
- Turn on airplane mode and make sure Wi-Fi is off.
- Close and reopen the story.
- Try opening a later chapter.
If the text loads, you have a useful confirmation that the copy is available locally. Embedded media and external links may still require an internet connection.
How to download a story when AO3 is available
Open the work on AO3, select Download near the top and choose your format. AO3 offers AZW3, EPUB, MOBI, PDF and HTML.
A download includes the chapters available at that time. A work in progress will need a new download to include later updates. Save your reading position before replacing an older copy.
An AO3 bookmark saves a reference to a work; it does not automatically save an offline ebook.
AO3’s download guidance also notes that embedded audio and video are not retained, and work skins do not carry over. Keep the original work link so you can revisit the creator’s presentation when the site is available.
Why won’t my downloaded AO3 story open?
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| The file will not open | Match its extension to a compatible reading app |
| Kindle rejects the upload | Use a supported Send to Kindle format, such as EPUB |
| Only a login or error page appears | The saved file may not contain the work |
| Recent chapters are missing | Your copy may predate those chapters |
| The story disappears offline | Finish downloading it inside the reading app |
| Duplicate copies appear | Compare versions and save your reading position before deleting one |
For a straightforward setup, keep the original download in a clearly named folder and import a reading copy into your preferred app. That makes it easier to move devices later without hunting for the file again.
