Maomao has a new mystery to solve and fans now know when they can join her. The Apothecary Diaries: The False Imperial Brother will launch on March 18, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam.
The release-date announcement arrived October 21 alongside a gameplay trailer. Developed by Gust and published by Koei Tecmo, the adventure brings the franchise to consoles with a new story involving its sharp-eyed apothecary.
A New Mystery From the Series’ Author
For readers, the most interesting detail is the involvement of Hyuganatsu, the author behind The Apothecary Diaries. According to Koei Tecmo’s original announcement, the game features an exclusive story and new characters conceptualized by the author.
Maomao investigates the Five Mysteries and Five Curses, strange incidents spreading through the rear palace, pleasure district, and capital. A masked man claiming to be the emperor’s younger brother complicates an investigation with potentially devastating consequences for the court.
That premise gives existing fans a fresh case to follow. The appeal is getting another mystery built around Maomao’s curiosity, medical knowledge, and willingness to question what other people accept.
What Will the Gameplay Be Like?
Investigations involve exploring locations, interviewing witnesses, and collecting evidence. Players also gather ingredients and prepare medicines that can help people or support a case.
During deductions, gathering clues is only the beginning. Players must connect information and present evidence when their conclusions meet resistance.
On paper, that structure feels well suited to this series. A satisfying Maomao game should make observation matter: the overlooked detail ought to be as exciting as the eventual revelation.
Jinshi and a Cat Offer New Ways to Investigate
The publisher’s latest update confirms that players will occasionally control Jinshi and a cat named Maomao.
Jinshi’s position allows him to obtain testimony unavailable to the human Maomao. The cat can reach otherwise inaccessible places and collect clues.
These changes could make the palace’s social barriers part of the puzzle. Who asks a question may matter just as much as what they ask.
Editions and Language Options
A Standard Edition and Digital Deluxe Edition are planned. The deluxe package adds costume and accessory packs, while the game will feature Japanese voices with English text.
Gematsu reports that PS5 and Switch 2 editions will be available physically and digitally in North America and Europe. The Switch 2 physical release uses a game-key card.
Why This Adaptation Is Worth Watching
The strongest reason to watch The False Imperial Brother is how directly its investigative format connects to Maomao’s appeal. Searching for evidence and testing an explanation could make readers feel involved in the kind of mystery they enjoy following on the page.
Whether the puzzles deliver remains to be seen. For now, fans can mark March 18, 2027, on their calendars.
