Isabel Allende has won the 2026 Premio Planeta for La hora antes del alba, a new novel that returns to the world of The House of the Spirits. Announced in Barcelona on October 15, the award carries a €1 million prize.

For readers, the biggest revelation is the book itself: Allende is revisiting Alba Trueba and exploring her life after the events of her celebrated debut. Planeta’s official announcement confirms that the story follows Alba into a new chapter shaped by memory, family and recovery after political violence.

What Is Isabel Allende’s Award-Winning Novel About?

La hora antes del alba brings Alba back to the center of Allende’s fiction after her experiences under the dictatorship.

According to EFE’s reporting from the award ceremony, the novel takes place immediately after the conclusion of The House of the Spirits. Allende described the book as closing that novel’s fictional universe.

That makes this announcement especially interesting for anyone who has wondered what happens beyond the original book’s final pages. Rather than simply introducing another generation, the premise asks readers to return to a character whose future remained open.

This is an announcement-based preview, rather than a review of the new novel.

Allende Entered Under a Pseudonym

Allende submitted the manuscript under the name Luz Ventura, using the title Los que faltan.

EFE reports that readers had been asking her what happened to Alba ever since The House of the Spirits appeared in 1982. Now, more than four decades later, she has chosen to revisit that question.

There is an important distinction between the dates: Allende spoke at the ceremony about writing her debut 45 years ago; its publication came in 1982.

Why the Return to Alba Matters

The appeal of this new book goes beyond revisiting familiar characters. Alba’s story raises a difficult question for a follow-up novel: what does rebuilding a life look like after survival?

The original book’s conclusion gives readers reasons for hope while leaving substantial uncertainty. A later story can explore the distance between deciding to move forward and actually living through that process.

For me, that is the most compelling part of the announcement. A return to this world has the potential to examine how memory changes over time, and how an individual carries a family’s history without allowing it to determine every part of her future. Whether the new novel achieves that will be a question for a full review.

What Is the Premio Planeta?

The Premio Planeta recognizes an unpublished novel written in Spanish. Its 2026 ceremony marked the award’s 75th edition.

Grupo Planeta reported 1,424 submitted manuscripts this year. The winning novel receives €1 million, while the finalist receives €200,000.

Sergio Hernández Carrasco was named this year’s finalist for La añoranza.

When Will La hora antes del alba Be Published?

ANSA reported on October 16 that the Spanish-language novel will go on sale November 4, with an initial print run of 210,000 copies.

That Spanish publication news does not establish an English-language release date. The sources reviewed for this article do not confirm an official English title or U.S. English edition date.

Should You Read The House of the Spirits First?

Reading the original first is the most useful preparation for a novel that follows Alba after its ending. It supplies the family relationships and history that give this return its significance.

For longtime readers, the award offers a reason to revisit those final pages. For newcomers, it offers a timely introduction to the book that began Allende’s literary career.
