A fresh start can be an appealing answer to a life that has gone off course. But what happens when the person making that escape is a writer—and the story she tells herself about her marriage begins to unravel?

That is the intriguing setup for The Amnesiac, Jami Attenberg’s forthcoming novel. Scheduled for May 11, 2027, the Ecco release follows a woman whose professional disappointment sends her toward a new life in New Orleans. The announced premise brings together creative ambition, marital uncertainty and the possibility of reinvention.

When Is The Amnesiac Coming Out?

The current U.S. release date for The Amnesiac is May 11, 2027. The Apple Books listing identifies Ecco as the publisher and offers the audiobook for preorder, with Helen Laser listed as narrator

The hardcover is currently listed at 320 pages in Target’s book specifications. These are advance publication details and may change before release.

What Is The Amnesiac About?

According to the publisher’s description, Nicole Abernathy’s debut novel receives a devastating review. She and her husband leave New York for a trip to New Orleans, hoping for a break from their troubles. Their enthusiasm for the city turns a temporary escape into a permanent move.

However, their new surroundings do not resolve everything. Nicole starts questioning her husband’s behavior and what he might be keeping from her. Her attempt to rebuild becomes a reckoning with her marriage, her creative identity and her own needs.

The announced story spans 15 years, suggesting a broader portrait of change than a single disastrous moment. The exact structure and the nature of her husband’s secrets remain unrevealed.

Why the New Orleans Setting Matters

Attenberg has a personal connection to the setting: she lives in New Orleans. In PEOPLE’s October 1 cover reveal, she described wanting the novel to capture the city’s sensuality, humor, emotional depth and community. She also said that living there for a decade helped prepare her to tell this story.

The cover was designed by Allison Saltzman and features photography by Diane Villadsen.

Based on that setup, the city appears to offer Nicole both possibility and distraction. That is an interpretation of the announcement, but it raises an interesting question: how much can moving somewhere new actually change a person’s life?

For a writer recovering from public rejection, changing cities also means finding a place where she might be understood differently. The tension between that promise and the unresolved problems she brings with her gives the premise its appeal.

Where This Fits in Jami Attenberg’s Work

Readers may recognize Attenberg from The Middlesteins, All Grown Up and A Reason to See You Again. Her official biography also lists the memoir I Came All This Way to Meet You: Writing Myself Home and her role as the creator of the annual 1000 Words of Summer writing project.

That background makes a novel about a writer’s damaged confidence an especially interesting addition to her work. Writing is both Nicole’s profession and part of how she understands herself. If that identity falters, rebuilding involves more than finding another job or another address.

Why This Premise Stands Out

The most compelling element is the collision of professional and personal uncertainty. Nicole must reconsider what she wants from her work while also questioning what she knows about the person closest to her.

For readers drawn to character-centered fiction, that offers plenty to watch for: the stories partners tell each other, the expectations attached to artistic success and the compromises involved in starting over. These are potential discussion points suggested by the premise, rather than judgments about the finished novel.

With its May 2027 release still ahead, The Amnesiac is one to keep in mind for readers interested in literary fiction about marriage, creativity and reinvention.
