Orion lists October 8, 2026 as the UK on-sale date. Hachette Book Group lists November 3, 2026 for the US hardcover, published by Cardinal. The US listing gives that hardcover a 352-page count and ISBN 9781538776100. Dates differ by market, so readers should check the edition sold in their country rather than assuming a single worldwide publication day.

What is The Heights about?

The title refers to a newly built, extremely exclusive high-rise overlooking Hyde Park. Its amenities and privacy serve wealthy residents, including owner-developer Allan Franklyn, who occupies the penthouse. The US publisher’s description also identifies an art dealer, a pop star, an heiress and a gangster’s wife among the people living there.

The building’s nighttime concierge, Dwayne Hogarth, is found dead in the lobby. Detective Sergeant Gillian Gish takes the case. Her initial questions concern a fourth-floor party that ended in a fight, an apartment key that has gone missing and a suspicious break in the security camera recording. These are starting points for the investigation, not answers to the mystery.

It is a setting built for a contained suspect list: people who live close together, have access to the same spaces and can afford to keep their private lives hidden. That setup suggests a classic whodunit filtered through Rankin’s interest in policing and social power. The publishers have not disclosed the murderer or the ending, and there is no reason to treat promotional hints as a solved case.

Is this a John Rebus book?

No. The Heights is promoted as a standalone thriller, with Gillian Gish leading the investigation in London. Rebus is not the advertised protagonist. For readers who have wanted to try Rankin without starting a long series, the independent story offers a clear entry point.

Orion calls it Rankin’s first standalone thriller in two decades. That is the publisher’s description of the new novel, not a claim that Rankin has written nothing outside the Rebus books during that period. The change of city also matters: the public face of the tower is polished and luxurious, while the death in its lobby forces its residents into a police inquiry they cannot fully control.

How is The Heights connected to The Rise?

The Heights is a full-length expansion of Rankin’s previously published short story The Rise. In a July 2026 interview with Peters, Rankin explained that he saw more potential in the original setting, plot and characters, and that readers had responded to Gillian Gish. That is a more specific reason for this project than simply calling it a departure from Rebus.

The novel is still presented as a standalone. The existence of the short story does not make it required reading before the new book. Readers familiar with The Rise may be especially interested in how Rankin uses the extra space of a novel to develop the residents, the detective and the building’s hidden relationships. How closely every event follows the short version is something to assess after reading the finished novel.

What makes this Rankin thriller different?

Rankin’s Rebus novels are closely associated with Edinburgh. The Heights shifts the action to London and centers a detective who must question people accustomed to getting their way. The building’s shared entrance, security system and staff create a natural framework for a murder investigation; its extreme wealth creates an obstacle for the investigator.

The most promising tension is between the tower’s promise of separation and the unavoidable public scrutiny that follows a death. That is the story the official descriptions set up; whether the novel fulfills it is a judgment for a review after publication.

Will Gillian Gish return in another book?

There is no announced Gish sequel. Rankin said in the Peters interview that people had wanted to see the detective again after The Rise, which helped prompt this expansion. Asked what would follow The Heights, he said he did not know and mentioned another novel or perhaps Rebus as possibilities. Interest in a character is not confirmation of a new series.

Should Rebus fans read The Heights?

If you come to Rankin for investigations that expose the character of a city, The Heights has a compelling premise: a London murder mystery in which the people closest to the victim inhabit a world of unusual privilege. The detective, setting and story are new enough to make it approachable for first-time Rankin readers, too.
