King of Scars Ending Explained: Is the Darkling Really Alive?

Nikolai and Zoya return to the palace, where they discover that Isaak has been murdered while impersonating the king. Nikolai exposes a Shu Han assassination plot and decides to marry the real Princess Ehri to prevent another war.

In Fjerda, Nina, Hanne, Adrik, and Leoni rescue the Grisha women being held inside a secret factory. Nina then accompanies Hanne to the Ice Court, placing herself close to Jarl Brum and the Fjerdan government.

Who Are the Saints Nikolai and Zoya Meet?

Nikolai, Zoya, and Yuri become trapped inside a surviving pocket of the Shadow Fold. There they encounter three legendary Grisha who became known as saints: Sankt Juris, Sankt Grigori, and Sankta Elizaveta.

All three were changed by the creatures associated with their deaths.

Juris became connected to the dragon that supposedly killed him. Grigori became part of the bears that tore him apart, while Elizaveta gained control over the bees connected to her legend.

Their continued existence shows that many stories about Ravka’s saints are incomplete or intentionally distorted. These figures were not necessarily divine beings. They were immensely powerful Grisha whose abilities became exaggerated through history, religion, and folklore.

This revelation also challenges the traditional boundaries of Grisha power. Grisha are taught to specialize in one particular branch of the Small Science, but Juris believes those divisions are artificial. He trains Zoya to stop thinking of herself as only a Squaller and to recognize the connections between different elements.

The saints are important because they represent what Grisha might become when they stop accepting the limitations placed upon them.

What Is Sankta Elizaveta’s Real Plan?

Elizaveta claims that she can remove the monster from Nikolai through an ancient ceremony called the Ritual of the Burning Thorn.

According to her explanation, Nikolai must summon the monster while standing inside the thorn wood. The ritual will separate Nikolai from the darkness within him, but only one of them will survive.

Elizaveta makes Nikolai believe that she is helping him save Ravka. In reality, she has preserved the Darkling’s body and intends to resurrect him.

The monster inside Nikolai was created from the Darkling’s power. Elizaveta plans to pull that darkness out of Nikolai and use it to return the Darkling’s spirit to his original body.

Yuri helps her because he has become completely devoted to the Starless Saint. He believes the Darkling was misunderstood and should be restored to his rightful place in Ravkan history.

Elizaveta’s betrayal reveals the danger behind the growing cult. Its members do not merely want the Darkling to be remembered as a saint. They want him to return.

Does Nikolai Get Rid of the Monster?

No. Nikolai does not completely lose the monster at the end of King of Scars.

The ritual forces Nikolai to confront the creature directly, but Elizaveta’s betrayal prevents it from working as promised. Instead of destroying the darkness, Nikolai begins to understand that the monster is part of him.

Throughout the novel, Nikolai treats the creature as an invading force that must be removed. He fears that accepting it would mean surrendering to the Darkling’s corruption. Before meeting Juris, she identifies primarily as a Squaller who controls wind and air pressure. Juris teaches her that the divisions between Grisha orders are human inventions rather than absolute laws of nature.

Everything in the natural world is connected. Air can shape water, feed fire, and carry the energy of a storm. Once Zoya understands those connections, she can reach beyond the limits of traditional Squaller abilities.

Her new bond with Juris strengthens that power, but the change is also emotional. Zoya has spent years hiding her pain beneath pride, anger, and discipline. Juris forces her to face the memories she has tried to bury, including the destruction of Novokribirsk and her guilt over once following the Darkling.

Accepting those wounds allows Zoya to stop fighting herself.

The moment is especially meaningful because the Darkling once valued Zoya primarily as a weapon. Juris helps her understand that her strength belongs to her—not to the Darkling, Ravka, or anyone else who wants to use it.

How Does the Darkling Return?

Zoya prevents Elizaveta from restoring the Darkling to his original body, but she does not destroy every trace of his power.

When Zoya burns the preserved body, some of the Darkling’s essence escapes. Yuri, who has willingly participated in the resurrection plot, becomes its new host.

After returning to the palace, Nikolai and Zoya bring Yuri before Genya, David, Tamar, Tolya, and the others. Yuri’s appearance and mannerisms begin to change. It becomes clear that the person speaking through him is no longer the frightened young monk.

The Darkling has taken control of Yuri’s body.

His final greeting confirms that he has returned, setting up the main conflict in Rule of Wolves.

The twist is fitting because Yuri’s worship makes him the ideal vessel. The Darkling has always been skilled at exploiting people who admire, fear, or depend upon him. Even after his death, the legend surrounding him gives him a path back into the world.

Who Kills Isaak?

Isaak is killed by Mayu Kir-Kaat, a member of the Shu royal guard who has been altered to look like Princess Ehri.

While Nikolai is missing, Genya uses her Tailoring abilities to make Isaak look like the king. His job is to maintain the illusion that Nikolai is still at the palace and help Ravka secure a political marriage.

Isaak develops feelings for the woman he believes is Princess Ehri. Neither of them is presenting their true identity: Isaak is pretending to be Nikolai, while Mayu is pretending to be Ehri.

During their final private meeting, Mayu stabs Isaak with a Fjerdan knife. She then stabs herself.

The plan is designed to make it appear that Fjerda assassinated both the King of Ravka and a Shu princess. Their deaths would give Shu Han a reason to enter the growing conflict while concealing the queen’s involvement.

Isaak dies without revealing that he is not Nikolai.

His death is one of the novel’s most tragic moments because he never sought power or recognition. He accepts the dangerous assignment because he is loyal to Nikolai and Ravka. In the end, he proves that he has the courage of a king even if he does not possess the title.

Who Is the Real Princess Ehri?

The real Princess Ehri has been disguised as Mayu Kir-Kaat, one of her own guards.

Queen Makhi, Ehri’s older sister, arranged the deception. The woman Isaak knows as Ehri is actually Mayu, while the apparent guard traveling beside her is the real princess.

After returning to the palace, Nikolai quickly understands the scheme. He reveals the real Ehri’s identity and prevents Shu Han from controlling the story surrounding the attack.

Nikolai also points out that Ehri would never have received the freedom she had been promised. As the queen’s younger sister and a possible rival to the throne, she would remain a political threat. Queen Makhi would eventually have needed to eliminate her.

Why Does Nikolai Decide to Marry Ehri?

Nikolai decides to marry the real Princess Ehri because the match gives Ravka political leverage over Shu Han.

Ehri participated in the deception, but she was also being used by her sister. Nikolai could expose the assassination attempt and execute her, but doing so would almost certainly lead to war.

Instead, he announces that Ehri will remain in Ravka as his future queen.

The decision accomplishes several things. It prevents Queen Makhi from quietly disposing of her sister, blocks Shu Han from blaming the assassination on Fjerda, and gives Ravka the possibility of a valuable alliance.

It is not a romantic decision. Nikolai is once again sacrificing his personal freedom to protect his country. His proposed marriage to Ehri demonstrates that becoming king has turned nearly every part of his life into a political calculation.

What Happens to Nina and the Grisha Women?

Nina, Hanne, Adrik, and Leoni successfully enter the Fjerdan factory and rescue the imprisoned Grisha women.

The factory is being used to conduct horrific experiments. Grisha women are drugged with jurda parem and forced to carry children who may be born with enhanced abilities and an addiction to the drug.

Nina uses her altered powers over the dead to attack the facility and help the prisoners escape. The group destroys the factory and secretly transports the survivors to safety.

They leave Jarl Brum alive and convince him that Nina and Hanne found and rescued him after the destruction. Brum therefore sees Nina, still disguised as Mila Jandersdat, as an innocent Fjerdan woman rather than the Grisha spy who once nearly killed him.

Why Does Nina Stay in Fjerda?

Nina stays because her position beside Hanne gives her an extraordinary opportunity to gather intelligence from inside the Fjerdan government.

Hanne is revealed to be Jarl Brum’s child and a secret Grisha. Because Brum is one of Fjerda’s most influential military leaders, Nina can use her identity as Mila Jandersdat to gain access to the Ice Court and information about Fjerda’s plans for Ravka.

The decision also completes an important stage in Nina’s grief. Earlier in the novel, she finally lays Matthias to rest in his homeland. Staying in Fjerda allows her to continue fighting for the future he wanted, a country where Fjerdans and Grisha no longer have to see each other as enemies.
