Start with The Mediterranean Caper if you want to read the Dirk Pitt books in publication order. Choose Pacific Vortex! if you want to begin with the adventure Clive Cussler wrote first. Both routes lead to Obsidian Sky, the 28th Dirk Pitt novel, which follows The Corsican Shadow. G.P. Putnam’s Sons has scheduled the U.S. hardcover, ebook and digital audiobook for November 10, 2026.

All 28 Dirk Pitt Books in Publication Order
This checklist uses original publication years. Read from the top to meet Pitt in the order readers did. To start with his earliest adventure, move Pacific Vortex! to the top, then go back to The Mediterranean Caper and skip the repeat at No. 6. Older copies of The Mediterranean Caper may be titled Mayday! or May Day.
Clive Cussler wrote the first 17 novels. His son Dirk Cussler joined him as coauthor with Black Wind, and they wrote eight installments together through Celtic Empire. Dirk Cussler then took over as sole author with The Devil’s Sea. The publisher also credits him as the sole author of The Corsican Shadow and Obsidian Sky.
Which Dirk Pitt Book Should You Read First?
For the original introduction, choose The Mediterranean Caper. A World War I fighter attacks a U.S. base on a Greek island, and Pitt and Al Giordino have to work out how it connects to sabotage against a scientific expedition. It’s a good introduction to the series’ favorite trick. An event that looks impossible turns out to be the first clue in a larger maritime mystery.
**For a missing-submarine thriller, choose Pacific Vortex!.** Pitt searches for a nuclear submarine that disappeared in an area where ships have a habit of vanishing. Cussler identified it as the first Pitt novel he wrote and the earliest in the story, even though it reached readers in 1983, a decade after The Mediterranean Caper. That’s why you’ll see different answers to the question of which book comes first.
**For one classic to try, choose Raise the Titanic!.** The title gives you the mission, and the Cold War rivalry gives the salvage operation its urgency. If the appeal of Dirk Pitt is watching an underwater expedition turn into an international thriller, this is an easy place to sample the series. Read it before Vixen 03 if you want to catch the later book’s reference to the Titanic operation in sequence.
Where Does Obsidian Sky Fit?
Obsidian Sky is Dirk Pitt book 28, immediately after The Corsican Shadow (2023). The last three books are also a convenient route into the Dirk Cussler era. Read The Devil’s Sea, then The Corsican Shadow, then Obsidian Sky. The publisher lists the large-print edition of Obsidian Sky separately for December 1, 2026.
The new adventure starts with an earthquake rescue that turns up an ancient silver scroll. Then Pitt and Giordino locate a missing Mediterranean freighter and discover that its particle accelerator has vanished. The hook is how those two discoveries fit together. If the new release is what brought you to the series, you can start here for that case. If you’d rather get to know Pitt and Giordino before their latest mission, start with The Mediterranean Caper.
Do the NUMA Files or Dirk Pitt Revealed Count?
The NUMA Files follow Kurt Austin in a separate series. You can use the checklist above without adding those books. There’s also Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt Revealed, an optional companion that includes a Pitt short story. It sits outside the 28-novel count.
