Leigh Bardugo is returning to Yale one last time with Dead Beat, the third and final book in the Ninth House trilogy. And considering how much happened in Ninth House and Hell Bent, secret societies, murder, ghosts, demons, trips to hell, vampires, and more than a few betrayals, a refresher is probably a good idea before jumping into the finale.
Dead Beat is officially the third book in the trilogy and is scheduled to be released on September 15, 2026 by Flatiron Books. The final novel picks up after Alex Stern and her friends accidentally leave a path open between hell and the living world, allowing demons to infiltrate New Haven and Yale.
That means the ending of Hell Bent is going to matter a lot.
If it has been a few years since you read Leigh Bardugo’s first two Alex Stern novels, here is everything you need to remember before reading Dead Beat.

Who Is Alex Stern?
Galaxy “Alex” Stern is the protagonist of the series, and understanding what makes her different is essential before Dead Beat.
Before Yale, Alex was living a dangerous life in Los Angeles surrounded by drugs and abusive people. She also possessed an ability almost nobody else had: Alex could see ghosts, known throughout the series as Grays.
After Alex becomes the lone survivor of a multiple homicide, she receives an unexpected opportunity to attend Yale on a full scholarship.
Of course, there is a catch.
Yale doesn’t suddenly become interested in Alex because of her grades. Lethe House wants her because she can naturally see Grays.
Lethe is essentially the watchdog organization responsible for monitoring Yale’s eight occult secret societies, whose rituals involve real magic. These societies aren’t merely playing around with candles and ancient books. Their rituals can manipulate markets, influence people, communicate with the dead, and cause very real harm.
Alex becomes Lethe’s new Dante, an apprentice who is supposed to learn from the organization’s more experienced student representative.
That student is Daniel Arlington—better known as Darlington.
Who Is Darlington?
Darlington is almost Alex’s complete opposite when Ninth House begins.
He is wealthy, polished, knowledgeable about Yale, fascinated by magic, and deeply committed to Lethe House.
Where Alex approaches Yale’s supernatural world with suspicion, Darlington has spent years trying to understand it.
Their relationship becomes one of the most important elements of the trilogy.
Darlington initially sees Alex as undisciplined and unprepared. Alex thinks he is privileged and overly enamored with Yale’s traditions. But the two gradually develop respect for one another.
Then Darlington disappears.
And figuring out what happened to him becomes one of the major mysteries connecting the first two books.

Tara Hutchins’ Murder Changes Everything
Much of Ninth House revolves around the murder of Tara Hutchins.
The authorities don’t initially believe her death has anything to do with Yale’s magical societies, but Alex isn’t convinced.
She begins investigating despite being told to leave the case alone.
The investigation forces Alex deeper into Yale’s secret magical world and reveals something that becomes increasingly important throughout the series: the institutions surrounding Alex are often much more interested in protecting themselves than protecting vulnerable people.
Power, privilege, and magic are all connected in Bardugo’s version of Yale.
And Alex isn’t very good at ignoring injustice simply because powerful people tell her to.
Alex Is Much More Powerful Than Anyone Realizes
One of the biggest revelations in Ninth House concerns what Alex can actually do with Grays.
Alex hasn’t merely spent her life seeing ghosts.
She can use them.
Her abilities become clearer when the truth about the horrific Los Angeles murder that brought her to Yale is revealed.
Alex’s friend Hellie died during the events surrounding that massacre. Alex then used the strength of the dead to kill Len and the others in the apartment.
Darlington eventually realizes the truth: Alex wasn’t simply the innocent survivor everyone believed her to be.
That doesn’t make Alex a traditional villain. If anything, it establishes one of the series’ defining ideas.
Alex survives.
Sometimes violently.
And her connection to death is much stronger than Lethe originally understood.
Dean Sandow Is Behind the Conspiracy
Alex eventually discovers that Dean Sandow is responsible for much of what has happened.
Sandow is connected to Tara’s murder and also played a role in Darlington’s disappearance.
Darlington was attacked by a hellbeast and dragged away, and Sandow later attempts to ensure that he doesn’t return.
By the end of Ninth House, Sandow is dead and Alex has solved Tara’s murder.
But the bigger mystery remains.
Darlington isn’t necessarily gone forever.
Darlington Is in Hell
Alex becomes convinced that Darlington survived his encounter with the hellbeast.
The problem?
He is trapped in hell and may no longer be entirely human.
Instead of accepting Darlington’s loss, Alex decides she is going to bring him back.
Dawes joins her.
And that decision leads directly into Hell Bent.
Hell Bent Recap
If Ninth House was a supernatural murder mystery, Hell Bent takes the series much deeper into dark fantasy.
Alex’s goal is simple in theory:
Find a way into hell and rescue Darlington.
Actually doing that proves much harder.
Alex and Dawes Search for a Door to Hell
Lethe refuses to support Alex’s plan.
So Alex and Dawes do what they have become very good at doing: break the rules.
They begin researching ways to enter the underworld and eventually assemble an unlikely team that includes Detective Turner, Mercy, and Tripp.
Their search leads them toward an old ritual known as the Gauntlet, which can provide access to hell.
But getting there requires confronting the participants’ darkest memories and the deaths that shaped them.
Alex Is a Wheelwalker
One of the most important revelations in Hell Bent is that Alex isn’t merely someone who can see ghosts.
She is something much rarer.
Alex is a Wheelwalker.
Her abilities give her an extraordinary connection to the boundaries between the living and the dead. She can move between worlds and use supernatural forces in ways even experienced occult practitioners don’t fully understand.
This explains why Alex has always been different.
It also appears likely to become even more important in Dead Beat, especially because the official synopsis says Alex and her allies will need to discover “the truth hidden in Alex’s own blood.”
The First Rescue Attempt Fails
Alex and the others successfully reach hell and find Darlington.
But rescuing him isn’t as simple as locating him.
Darlington has been trapped in a nightmarish existence centered around Black Elm, his family home.
When the group tries to escape, demonic creatures attack them.
Darlington ultimately stays behind so Alex and the others can escape.
They return to the living world without him.
Worse, their journey has consequences.
Something has followed them back.
Demons Begin Hunting the Group
After returning from hell, Alex begins encountering demons.
One takes the appearance of Hellie.
These creatures aren’t random.
They prey upon the group using people and memories capable of causing the greatest emotional damage.
At the same time, strange murders continue around New Haven.
For a while, it even appears possible that Darlington himself might somehow be responsible.
The truth turns out to be much stranger.
Anselm Is Actually Golgarot
One of Hell Bent’s biggest twists involves Anselm.
The man Alex believes is a Lethe authority figure is actually connected to a demon named Golgarot.
Golgarot manipulated events around Darlington and Lethe and had been working to prevent Darlington from being rescued.
Alex eventually discovers the deception at Black Elm.
Using her abilities as a Wheelwalker, she crosses the boundary into hell, retrieves Darlington’s soul, and restores it to his body.
Finally, Darlington is back.
Sort of.
Darlington Isn’t Completely Human Anymore
Darlington survives.
But the Darlington who returns from hell isn’t exactly the same man Alex knew.
His experience in the underworld has changed him physically and supernaturally.
He possesses dangerous demonic abilities and struggles with what he has become.
There is also a powerful supernatural connection between Darlington and Alex.
That relationship has been building since Ninth House, and the official description of Dead Beat makes it clear that Darlington’s new powers will remain extremely important in the final book.
Tripp Becomes a Vampire
Tripp also undergoes a huge transformation at the end of Hell Bent.
A demon successfully consumes him, effectively turning him into a vampire.
But Tripp’s situation is unusual.
His personality remains, and Alex’s group decides not to destroy him.
That might have seemed like a strange side plot at the end of Hell Bent, but it is clearly important going forward: Bardugo’s official description for Dead Beat specifically mentions both Tripp and a dangerous vampire connected to Yale’s societies.
Michelle Was Connected to Linus Reiter
Another thread worth remembering involves Michelle Alameddine, Darlington’s former mentor.
At Black Elm, Alex and Darlington discover Michelle in the trunk of Darlington’s Mercedes.
Evidence reveals that Michelle had secretly been connected to Linus Reiter, the mysterious vampire Alex encountered earlier.
Reiter has deep ties to Lethe’s history and the original experiments involving passage between worlds.
That storyline isn’t fully resolved in Hell Bent.
And considering the official Dead Beat synopsis mentions a vampire with connections to Yale’s secret societies, Reiter is one character readers should absolutely remember.
The Biggest Thing to Remember: Alex Left the Door to Hell Open
This is the plot point that matters most before Dead Beat.
Alex and her friends believe they have survived their final confrontation in hell.
But they haven’t escaped without consequences.
Golgarot uses Alex’s spilled blood to keep the gateway between hell and the mortal world open.
Alex realizes this when she sees another demon in New Haven.
Their trips into hell have damaged the boundary between the worlds.
And that is where Hell Bent leaves us.
What Dead Beat Is About
According to Leigh Bardugo and Flatiron Books, demons are now moving through New Haven and Yale, feeding on living souls and terrifying the dead.
Alex and her friends can fight individual demons, but that won’t solve the larger problem.
The gates of hell are threatening to open completely.
Stopping that catastrophe will force Alex and her allies to investigate both Yale’s supernatural history and the mysteries surrounding Alex herself.
And Alex finally has something she rarely possessed earlier in the trilogy:
A team.
Dawes, Turner, Mercy, Tripp, and Darlington are all expected to play major roles.
The Characters to Remember Before Dead Beat
Alex Stern: A Yale student, Lethe member, survivor, and Wheelwalker with extraordinary power over the boundary between life and death.
Darlington: Alex’s mentor who was dragged into hell, transformed by it, and eventually rescued. He now possesses dangerous supernatural abilities.
Pamela Dawes: Lethe’s researcher and one of Alex’s most loyal allies. She helped devise the plan to rescue Darlington.
Detective Turner: A New Haven police detective who initially resisted Alex’s interference but has increasingly become part of her supernatural inner circle.
Mercy: Alex’s roommate and friend who becomes directly involved in the journey into hell.
Tripp: A former Skull and Bones member who ends Hell Bent transformed into a vampire while retaining much of his old personality.
Linus Reiter: A mysterious vampire connected to Lethe’s history and the Gauntlet.
Golgarot: The demon responsible for manipulating many of the events surrounding Darlington and the gateways to hell.
Questions Dead Beat Needs to Answer
The first two books leave Bardugo with several major mysteries to resolve.
What exactly is a Wheelwalker, and where does Alex’s power come from?
Why does the synopsis specifically reference the truth hidden in Alex’s blood?
What has Darlington truly become?
Can his demonic side be controlled?
What is Linus Reiter planning?
What role will vampire Tripp play?
Can the doorway between New Haven and hell actually be closed?
And perhaps most importantly, what happens to Alex after all of this?
Yale originally represented the possibility of a completely different future for her. Across two books, Alex has repeatedly risked that future to save people the institutions around her were willing to sacrifice.
Dead Beat will finally reveal what that choice costs her.
Final Thoughts Before Dead Beat
There is a lot to remember heading into the final Ninth House book, but the most important development is actually pretty simple.
Alex went to hell to save Darlington.
She succeeded.
But she brought hell back with her.
That makes Dead Beat feel like the natural escalation of everything Bardugo has been building since Ninth House. What started as a dark academia murder mystery has slowly expanded into a story about death, demons, institutional power, friendship, and the increasingly thin boundary separating Yale from the supernatural world beneath it.
And now Alex doesn’t have to fight alone.
After everything that happened in Ninth House and Hell Bent, that might turn out to be the most important change of all.
