Peter Heller Had an Emotional Reaction to Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars

For an author, seeing characters that once existed only on the page suddenly come alive on a movie set has to be a surreal experience. For Peter Heller, watching Ridley Scott turn his acclaimed novel The Dog Stars into a major Hollywood movie proved to be an emotional one.

Heller revealed that seeing Jacob Elordi step into the role of Hig brought him to tears, as memories of writing the novel more than a decade earlier came rushing back.

The highly anticipated adaptation of The Dog Stars, directed by legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott, arrives in theaters on August 28, 2026. The movie stars Elordi alongside Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, Benedict Wong, and Allison Janney.

Peter Heller Was Moved to Tears Seeing The Dog Stars Come to Life

Heller published The Dog Stars in 2012, long before the post-apocalyptic novel finally made its way to the big screen.

Speaking to PEOPLE ahead of the movie’s release, Heller described watching the adaptation and immediately being transported back to the period when he first wrote the book.

When Elordi appeared as Hig and began speaking, the experience became overwhelming for Heller.

“I just had tears coming down my cheeks,” Heller said.

He explained that watching the character come alive in another medium, through the work of other artists, was incredibly moving. Heller had written the novel during an intense seven-month creative period, making the experience of seeing those ideas transformed into a Ridley Scott movie even more powerful.

It wasn’t the first time Elordi’s portrayal had produced that reaction. Heller separately told 5280 that he became emotional while visiting the film’s set in Italy and watching Elordi perform one of the first scenes. He felt that the actor had truly captured Hig despite being considerably younger than the character Heller originally imagined.

Peter Heller Gave the Filmmakers Freedom to Adapt His Novel

Book-to-movie adaptations often create tension between authors and filmmakers, especially when major changes are made.

Heller took a much different approach.

Screenwriter Mark L. Smith consulted with Heller about changes needed to translate The Dog Stars from the page to the screen. Eventually, Heller essentially encouraged Smith to make the movie he believed worked best rather than attempting to reproduce every detail of the novel.

Heller told PEOPLE that he didn’t expect his book to simply be recreated on screen. Instead, he viewed the adaptation as an opportunity for another group of artists to create their own work inspired by his novel. Most importantly, Heller felt the finished screenplay captured the heart and spirit of his story.

That attitude appears to have carried through to the finished movie.

After seeing The Dog Stars, Heller told Reuters he was “blown away” and believed the film preserved the novel’s central message about keeping your heart open and risking emotional connection even in devastating circumstances.

Heller Was Impressed by Ridley Scott and the Cast

Heller also visited The Dog Stars set in Italy, where he discovered just how seriously the filmmakers were taking the source material.

According to Heller, copies of his novel were available throughout the production for cast and crew members. He also recalled Guy Pearce approaching him and expressing his admiration for the book.

Heller was particularly fascinated by Scott’s filmmaking process.

Scott is known for working quickly and often relying on instinct rather than excessive rehearsal. Heller recognized similarities between that method and his own approach to writing The Dog Stars, which he began without a detailed outline or predetermined plot.

Both approaches rely heavily on trusting the creative process and seeing where the story leads.

Considering Scott’s long career directing movies such as Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and The Martian, watching him transform Heller’s first novel into a major motion picture understandably became a remarkable moment for the author.

What Is The Dog Stars About?

The Dog Stars takes place after a devastating pandemic has destroyed much of civilization.

Hig is one of the survivors.

He lives at an abandoned Colorado airport alongside his dog Jasper and Bangley, a heavily armed survivalist who takes a much more suspicious view of the remaining world.

Hig regularly flies an old Cessna over the surrounding landscape, searching for supplies and signs of life.

Eventually, a mysterious radio transmission gives him reason to believe that something, or someone, may exist beyond the isolated life he and Bangley have created. Hig decides to venture into the unknown, hoping to discover whether humanity and meaningful connection can still survive.

The movie follows that same central premise, with Jacob Elordi playing Hig and Josh Brolin playing Bangley. Margaret Qualley stars as Cima, while Guy Pearce plays her father, Pops.

Ridley Scott Wanted The Dog Stars to Be About Hope

While The Dog Stars takes place in a world devastated by a pandemic, Ridley Scott apparently wasn’t interested in creating another relentlessly bleak apocalypse movie.

Scott told Reuters that optimism was “essential” to the film and specifically pointed out that this isn’t another zombie story.

That is an important distinction because Heller’s novel has always been about much more than simply surviving the end of civilization.

Hig is surrounded by death, loneliness, and danger, but he remains interested in beauty, companionship, nature, and the possibility of finding other people worth trusting.

That emotional core may explain why Heller has responded so positively to Scott’s interpretation.

The explosions, abandoned landscapes, survival tactics, and dangers may make The Dog Stars look like a traditional post-apocalyptic thriller, but underneath everything is a story about whether people can still choose compassion after the world gives them every reason not to.

Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars is scheduled to open in theaters in the United States on August 28, 2026, following the beginning of its international theatrical rollout earlier that week.

But Heller’s reaction should give fans some reason to be optimistic.

He didn’t demand that Scott and Smith reproduce every scene or detail exactly as it appeared in the novel. What mattered to him was whether they understood what the story was ultimately trying to say.

Judging from his emotional reaction to Elordi as Hig and his praise for the completed adaptation, Heller believes they did.

And for readers who have spent years waiting to see Hig, Jasper, Bangley, and the haunting world of The Dog Stars on the big screen, August 28 can’t come soon enough.
