Brandon Sanderson fans have a lot to celebrate right now. Between the upcoming Mistborn and Stormlight Archive adaptations, it seemed like Hollywood had already embraced one of fantasy’s biggest authors. But now another beloved Sanderson series is heading to the screen. His bestselling YA sci-fi novel Skyward is officially being adapted into a television series, bringing Spensa Nightshade and the Cytoverse to an entirely new audience.
For longtime readers, this announcement feels like a natural next step. Skyward has always felt cinematic, filled with high-speed aerial battles, memorable characters, and a coming-of-age story that practically begs for a television adaptation. The good news is that Sanderson himself will be heavily involved in bringing the series to life.
A Skyward TV Series Is Officially in Development
The adaptation is being developed by Tomorrow Studios, the production company behind Netflix’s successful live-action One Piece series. The studio has acquired the television rights to Skyward and is currently developing the project.
Perhaps the most encouraging part of the announcement is that Sanderson isn’t simply licensing the rights and stepping away. He will co-write the pilot episode alongside Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, the duo best known for their work on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. All three will also serve as executive producers.
Given Sanderson’s long-standing desire to have meaningful creative control over adaptations of his work, his involvement should reassure fans who want the series to remain faithful to the books.
What Is Skyward About?
Originally published in 2018, Skyward follows Spensa Nightshade, a young woman living on the harsh planet Detritus. Humanity has spent generations fighting off mysterious alien attackers, and becoming a fighter pilot is one of the highest honors in society.
Spensa dreams of joining the fighter corps and proving herself despite the stigma attached to her family name. Her father was branded a coward after abandoning his squad during battle, and Spensa has spent her entire life trying to overcome that legacy. As she pursues her dream, she uncovers secrets about her world, her enemies, and herself.
The novel combines space combat, military science fiction, mystery, and coming-of-age storytelling into a fast-paced adventure that appeals to both young adult and adult readers.
Why Skyward Could Be Easier to Adapt Than Other Sanderson Books
As much as fans would love to see the full Cosmere brought to life, Sanderson’s fantasy worlds are incredibly ambitious. Massive magic systems, sprawling casts, and interconnected storylines make adaptations challenging.
Skyward is different.
While the series still contains plenty of worldbuilding, its central story is more focused. The narrative largely follows Spensa’s journey from aspiring pilot to hero, making it easier for television audiences to follow. The action sequences are also built around starfighter combat, something modern visual effects teams have become very good at creating.
In many ways, Skyward feels like a perfect bridge between blockbuster science fiction and character-driven television.
Brandon Sanderson Continues His Hollywood Expansion
The Skyward announcement comes during what may be the biggest year of Sanderson’s career outside of publishing.
Earlier this year, Apple secured adaptation rights for Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive, with plans to develop Mistborn as a film franchise and Stormlight Archive as a television series. Sanderson is also actively involved in those projects.
For years, fans wondered whether Sanderson’s books would ever receive major adaptations. Now, multiple projects are moving forward simultaneously.
What makes this particularly exciting is that Skyward exists outside the Cosmere universe. That means viewers unfamiliar with Sanderson’s larger body of work can jump into the story without needing knowledge of dozens of interconnected novels.
No Release Date Yet
Before fans start counting down the days, it’s important to remember that the project is still in the early stages of development.
Currently, the series is at the pilot-writing stage, and no streaming platform or network has been announced. Casting information and production timelines have not yet been revealed.
That means it may be some time before we see Spensa flying across our screens. Still, the fact that a studio, writers, and producers are already attached makes this one of the most promising Sanderson adaptations currently in development.
Why Fans Should Be Excited
As someone who has read Skyward, I can’t think of a better Sanderson series to adapt right now. The novel already feels like prestige television waiting to happen. It has a compelling protagonist, thrilling action, emotional stakes, and enough mysteries to keep viewers hooked from episode to episode.
The involvement of Tomorrow Studios is encouraging given the success of One Piece, and Sanderson’s hands-on role should help preserve what made the books special in the first place.
If everything comes together, Skyward could become the next great science-fiction series on television—and perhaps introduce millions of viewers to Brandon Sanderson’s work for the very first time.
