If it wasn’t for classic novels, I don’t think I would be as avid a reader as I was. I remember going down the rabbit hole and reading all the classic novels that were labeled as must reads. And even now and then, I would come across an amazing novel the reaffirmed my love for reading.

Not every classic novel is equal though. Some classic novels are a heavy read that might turn you off on reading. If you do read a classic novel that you are not enjoying, I recommend dropping it and finding another one. There is nothing wrong in not finishing a book you aren’t enjoying.

The classic novels we chose for this list are incredible reads that you will be unable to put down. All of these novels are ranked highly on our list of must read books. You can see the full list below!

Classic Novels You Need to Read in 2026

A Confederacy of Dunces

A Confederacy of Dunces book review

A classic novel that doesn’t get the attention it deserves is A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. The novel was published 11 years after the author committed suicide. Toole’s mother repeatedly asked Walker Percy, an author and a college instructor to read it and he loved it.

When the novel was finally published, it was well received and Toole went on to win a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. And having read it, I can see why. It is a fantastic novel and you will be laughing the whole time.

Publishers don’t know always know about books and this book is a great example. Toole’s story is a tragic tale of unrecognized talent. Now if you go to New Orleans, you will most likely see a copy of A Confederacy of Dunces a few times. One of the reasons I visited New Orleans was because of how Toole writes about the city in his novel.

The Outsiders

The Outsiders book review

The first book that I remember reading in junior high school that got me reading because I enjoyed the book was The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton. Not only did I read this novel ahead of the given reading assignment, I ended up reading other books be Hinton as a result.

One night out changes the life of Ponyboy. The Socs, a gang of rich kids, enjoy beating up the Greasers, a poor gang that Ponyboy is a part of. A chance encounter leads to a fight that leads to Ponyboy and his friends running away for their lives. It is up to Ponyboy’s brothers and friends to help them escape trouble and the Socs who want revenge.

This coming of age story has stayed with me over the course of my life and it is a novel I revisit often. It is still hard to believe Hinton began writing this classic novel when she was 16. Now, it is taught in schools all across the U.S.

One Hundred Years of Solitude

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez

I put off reading  One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez for a long time and after reading it, I regretted that decision. I was hooked from page one and loved this wonderful magical world that Márquez created. To this day, I am still angry for not reading this novel earlier.

After killing Prudencio Aguilar because of an argument, José Arcadio Buendía and his wife Úrsula Iguarán leave town to search for another place to live. Eventually, they settle near a riverbank and call their new home Macondo.

What follows is the story of seven generations of the Buendía family and the rise and fall of Macondo. The stories of the family go from happy to sad and happy again as the town they live in goes through changes, sweeping the family along as a result.

Every single page of this novel was perfect and I am glad that I did read this. It is easily one of the best books I read in 2025 and one I will revisit next year. in 1982, Gabriel García Márquez won the Nobel Prize for Literature because of this novel.

The Giver

The Giver by Lois Lowry
The Giver by Lois Lowry

Another class novel I read in school was The Giver by Lois Lowry. But it didn’t leave a memorable impact. When I read the novel years later, I was taken away by how incredible this novel was. It is considered one of the best dystopian novels ever written and I can see why. Sometimes being older helps a novel resonate with you.

The books follows 12-year-old Jonas who lives in a community that is isolated and everyone is assigned a role. The annual Ceremony of Twelve is going to take place soon and has Jonas worried.

He will be assigned a job for the rest of his career by the elders and is nervous about it. But things take an unexpected turn and changes the course of Jonas’ life and everything he knew about the Community he grew up in.

The Giver is credited as being the novel that focused on young adult readers in the dystopian genre. It was the catalyst and inspiration for the change in direction and led to a surge in popularity that happened in the late 2000s. without this novel, we wouldn’t have gotten some of our beloved series as a result such as The Hunger Games.

The Talented Mr. Ripley

The Talented Mr. Ripley book review

I am a big fan of The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith and what the novel offers. It is a novel that follows the descent into madness of Ripley. And what lengths he will go to keep up the ruse. Highsmith’s Highsmith’s characters and her plot make her one of my favorite authors in the thriller genre.

Highsmith is a unique character who explores the true nature of a person and what people are capable of. There hasn’t been another author like her and most likely ever won’t be. Her protagonists will terrify you for their wavering morality and self preservation.

Protagonist Tom Ripley is up to his old tricks again, scamming people to survive. His luck has been bad and he is fed up with his life. And he fears that the police are going to arrest his for his scams.

But Tom’s luck turns around when he is approached by a shipping magnate named Herbert Greenleaf. He wants Ripley to convince his son to return home from Italy.

Ripley thus finds himself heading to Italy with Greenleaf funding his trip. But Greenleaf’s son Dickie isn’t fond of Tom and suspects Tom. It is now up to Tom to continue this scam and live the life he always wanted. But his lies are bound to catch up to him.

The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the Rye Holden Caullfield classic novel
The Catcher in the Rye book review

A classic novel that I believe everyone should read is The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. It is a classic novel that is a beautiful coming of age story. It is taught in high schools and has a lot to impart on students. The novel had a powerful effect on me and till this day, I think about Holden Caulfield and the ducks at Central Park.

17-year old Holden Caulfield has been kicked out his boarding school in Pennsylvania. Winter Break is around the corner and he decides to go back to New York City. But he doesn’t tell his parents that he has been kicked out. Instead, Holden books a hotel in New York.

He explores New York City and finds all the adults to be phony and lashes out. A drunk night out leads to him visiting his younger sister who represents all that is innocent to him. All Holden wants to do is to leave everything behind and start new but where does he go from here?

This novel either resonates with readers or they end up hating it with a passion. A big reason is that Holden appeals to a certain of reader. It also doesn’t help that the world is completely different than it was in 1951. I think this is a classic novel that still captures what it means to grow up through the lens of a teenager.
