Unlike many genres, Lit RPG is niche and caters to a smaller audience. A part of that is that it is new and because not many people know about it. The Lit RPG genre is a combination of sci-fi and fantasy novels but with a twist. It includes a role paying game format that you would find in games.
Often times, there is an a system that helps the protagonist navigate this new world that they have encountered. The protagonist can level up, level their abilities and gain new skills. And this genre has many sub genres that can change the direction of a novel.
Lit RPG’s are a great way to combine your love of video games and books. Many games try to world build and have a story that keeps the game interesting. Lit RPG novels have started to become more recognized and the genre is having a moment.
Usually, I would choose the best Lit RPG books to share with you but that isn’t what I decided to do. Instead, I decided to share Lit RPG novel that I read recently that I recommend .You can see the full list below.
LitRPG Books That Got Me Hooked
- A Thousand Li by Tao Wong
- Monk Of Black Flame by J.R Wales
- Second Life Executioner by J.R Wales, R.N Richmond
- Jack of All by Nemo Blanc
- Die. Respawn. Repeat by Silver Linings
A Thousand Li

My journey into Lit RPG novels started with A Thousand Li by Tao Wong. I decided to choose this novel because the book blurb was interesting. And I am glad that I did because this was the perfect first Lit RPG to read. Without this novel, I don’t know if I would have continued reading Lit RPG’s.
Long Wu Ying is training in the small village he calls home when the army arrives. Wu Ying and his fellow villagers are conscripted and must join the war effort. But a wound leaves hurt and he is left behind. As luck would have it, Wu Ying finds himself an opportunity to join the Verdant Green Waters Sect.
Now, Wu Ying must decide if that is the path he wants to choose. It is not an easy path and it will take him away from his family and village. But it is also the one that can give him the power to protect his family.
That is how Wu Ying finds himself on the road to immortality. He must become stronger and rise in the ranks of the Verdant Green Waters Sect and make a name for himself. Only then will he be truly in control of his own destiny.
A Thousand Li is a 12 book series that follows Wu Ying’s growth. I really enjoyed these novels and being able to see Wu Wing’s adventures. This isn’t your typical Lit RPG but it is addicting nonetheless. Tao Wong is a fantastic writer and I can’t wait to read more of his work.
Monk Of Black Flame

After reading A Thousand Li, I decided to see what else was out there. That is how I came across Monk Of Black Flame by J.R Wales. This one was a lot different and it is fast paced and action packed.
The pacing made me really enjoy this novel and I enjoyed seeing levels and abilities. A big difference between the A Thousand Li and this novel was that there was a system that the protagonist can see. As the reader, you are shown the protagonists levels and abilities. This feels like a true Lit RPG and you will feel like you are playing a game.
Fang is a monk with a useless skill called the Dormant Hell Monk Class. He is shunned by his fellow monks but when he ends up in the Seventh Hell, his dormant class finally wakes up. Now, Fang has a new class that he is set on leveling up in hell,
But he knows that to truly become strong, he must attend the martial academy of the Heavenly Accord. It is there where he meets other students and is able to make a name for himself. But the trail ahead of him is not an easy one. He has to become strong as fast as he can to to reach the deepest levels of hell.
This was a lot different than my prior experience and I really enjoyed this novel a lot. I am waiting for the rest of this series to be released because I need to known what happens next!
Second Life Executioner

After reading that fantastic novel by J.R. Wales, I was eager to read more works by him That is how I ended up coming across Second Life Executioner by J.R Wales, R.N Richmond. This novel is completely different from the last one and in my opinion a lot more fun!
Darius was an execution born to serve. He mastered the Blade Technique that has been passed down his family for generations. But for his loyalty, Darius is executed.
However, Darius wakes up and finds himself in a new world. He is in a dungeon that is home to strange creatures. A System tells him of his levels and abilities and Darius plans to master it to become as strong as he possibly can. To do that, he must rely on training from his past life and adapt it to this new world.
I loved every second of this novel and I have to give credit to the pacing of this novel. There is never a dull moment and it is easy to follow. Wales and Richmond keep things fun and yet simple. Darius is a relatable protagonist and I will be tuning into this series in the future as well.
Jack of All by Nemo Blanc

After those three Lit RPG’s, I wanted more but my luck of finding good novels to read wasn’t holding up anymore. After some looking around, I decided to read Jack of All by Nemo Blanc. This one was the most original and the one that made me laugh the most. That just goes to show you that there is a lot this genre has to offer.
Jack wakes up in a forest in a new world with no prior memories. He is alone and naked and he has to survive by using what is around him. But very soon, Jack learns that there are classes in this world and he can level them up.
Soon after, Jack learns that you shouldn’t have too many classes or they all combine and become useless. As Jack explores the new world he inhibits and makes new friends, he realizes that trouble is always around the corner. To survive snd to keep his new friends safe, he needs to grow strong fast and learn everything there is about this new world and the skills he has.
What I loved about this novel is the nonchalant writing but it also gets serious when it needs to. There are a ton of themes that it touches that many novels would avoid. The world building and cast of characters makes this novel fun. And the magic system is a meters that slowly unlocks and gives the novel the mysterious element to keep you hooked.
Die. Respawn. Repeat

Even after reading four different Lit RPG novels, I was still eager to read more. And after some browsing, I came across Die. Respawn. Repeat by Silver Linings. It was different from my past novels and I was curious to see what else the genre has to offer.
Ethan Hill is one of thousands of participants chosen for Integration. He has to go through the trials on another planet and every time he dies, he loops back to the beginning.
The system gives Ethan abilities to fight the monsters in the trial. But Ethan knows that the Integration can’t be trusted. It has ulterior motives and Ethan plans to find out what they are plans to and save Earth and end the trials for once and for all, no matter how many lives it takes.
I really enjoyed this novel and I am currently reading the rest of the series. Novels that use time loops as a plot are unique and when done right, are great to read. I hope the rest of the series is just as good as the first novel.
Conclusion
When I decided to read my first Lit RPG novel, I didn’t mow what to expect. But I am glad that I did because it has been a fun experience. I don’t know how much more new Lit RPG novels I will read but I will finish the ones I started.
Or I might read the more well known Lit RPG novels and see if they live up t the hype. Whatever I do, I will make sure to share my reading journey with my fellow readers. I know that I haven’t even scratched the surface of what this genre has to offer.
