If you have just got done reading A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin and are looking for similar novels, then look no further. We have selected 7 books to read after reading Game of Thrones series that you will love. Keep reading to find out which books to check out!
Many people are familiar with the HBO show but the novels are what started the journey. Martin’s novels are detailed, beautifully written, and much more detailed. While the novels do contain a lot of violence at times, it is a part of the story that Martin feels compelled to write.

We have selected 7 novels that are going to capture the fantasy element that the A Song of Ice and Fire is known for. There will only be one A Game of Thrones series but you will be more than satisfied when reading these epic novels. You can see the list below.
7 Books to Read After Reading A Game of Thrones Series
- The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie
- The Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson
- The Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien
- The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan
- The Stormlight Archives Brandon Sanderson
- The Dragonbone Chair series by Tad Williams
- The Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K. Le Guin
The First law
The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie may be one series on the list that may eb able to match the violence of Martin’s novels. Whereas characters in A Game of Thrones are royalty, that isn’t usually the case in The First Law. It is a dark and gritty novel that doesn’t play into the hero tropes, instead following a bunch of characters that somehow are stuck together as disaster surrounds them.
Mistbord
One of my favorites on the list is The Mistborn Series by Brandon Sanderson. It has a magical system that is easy to follow and a lot of fun characters. Sanderson tells a story of a powerful villain that seems immortal. The hero has to muster a force to take down the cruel emperor that has been ruling for centuries. And while this might not be Sanderson’s best fantasy novel, it is my favorite one.
The Wheel of Time

A series that follows the prophecy theme of A Game of Thrones is The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. The world building is also complex and it doesn’t have too many characters like A Game of Thrones. You will be able to see the influence of The Lord of the Rings on these series a lot as well as seeing how Jordan decided to take his novels in another direction.
The Dragonbone Chair
Few may know this but A Game of Thrones was influenced heavily by The Dragonbone Chair series by Tad Williams. That is reason alone to read the fantasy novel. The declining health of the king, siblings start plotting for the throne as old-secrets are revealed. Sounds familiar?
A Wizard of Earthsea
When you are talking about the best fantasy novels of all time, you can’t forget Ursula K. Le Guin’s A Wizard of Earthsea. It is the novel that inspired Harry Potter, created a magic system many novels have adopted, and was one of the first to imagine a wizard as someone young and not someone who is old and wise. These are just some of the things that make this a must read and I loved every second of it.
