This blog is a huge fantasy and sci-fi fan and we often cover some of the biggest fantasy and sci-fi books released. With so many amazing classics, the task is never ending. Today, we will look at the five best science fantasy novel recommendations chosen by award winning fantasy and sci-fi author Vajra Chandrasekera.
The fantasy and sci-fi genre are often categorized together on many lists. But they are very different and yet, they often cross paths in many novels. Sometimes a novel is both a fantasy and a sci-fi novel. That is not an easy feat and can overwhelm many authors as well as readers. But when done right, it leads to an amazing novel and series.
Vajra Chandrasekera is an author who has written many sci-fi and fantasy novels and has insight that readers do not. His five science fantasy book recommendations are all great picks that I will be adding to my reading list. You can see the full list below!
The Five Best Science Fantasy Novel Recommendations
- The Old Drift by Namwali Serpell
- Gnomon by Nick Harkaway
- Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
- Exordia by Seth Dickinson
- Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
The Old Drift
The Old Drift by Namwali Serpell was released in 2019 and went on to win the Arthur C. Clarke Award. I unfortunately haven’t heard of this novel before today and will adding it to my to-read list. The novel is told through multiple characters across generations which always make for good reads.
Harrow the Ninth
A novel that I read and gave up on because I was lost made this list. Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir is a sci-fi fantasy novel unlike anything else and I will be giving it another read in the future. I read Gideon the Ninth, the first book in the series and loved it so I do think this novel deserves another chance.
Piranesi

The only book on this list that I have read is Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. This is the second novel by Clarke and it lived up to the hype of following a novel after Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. Clarke’s characters and worldbuilding skills are top notch and a must read. Few authors ever have one memorable novel but Clarke delivers with two amazing novels that have become a mainstay in the genres.

That ends this list of the five best science fantasy novel recommendations selected by Vajra Chandrasekera. Like you, I am haven’t read most of the books on the list and will be checking them out. How many of these novels have you read or plan to read? Let us know in the comments below!
