I can’t believe that 2024 is over and that we are officially in 2025!. What an amazing year it has been for new books and all the books I was able to read. With over 60 books read, I had a lot of books to choose from and have chosen my ten favorite books that I read in 2024!
My goal coming into this year was to read 60 books and I am very close to this goal. Hopefully I do hit it and will try my best to. But this article will be about the books that I did read this year. And I started the year with one of the best books of 2023.
Starting off the year with The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride is a double-edged sword. This is an incredible novel and it melted my heart and I wanted to recommend this book to everyone. James McBride is an author that everyone should read because his stories are uplifting and are written in a way that when everything comes together, you want to yell in excitement.
But because this novel is amazing, the book that follows after won’t be as good most likely. But I was able to avoid this problem by having a bunch of books lined up after and did come across some that I loved for their own reasons.

Tokyo Ueno Station
One of the recent trends that I have been doing is reading a Japanese novel. I came across Tokyo Ueno Station by Yū Miri, Morgan Giles (Translator) on a list of must read Japanese books and I was awestruck with the writing style and the message that Miri conveys in this short novel. Even months later, this novel was occupying a space on my mind and I loved learning about Japanese culture and history and a point of view that isn’t covered enough.
Killers of the Flower Moon

There are some movies that make me learn about a book and make me want to read them. And this year, I was eager to read Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann after watching the movie and the book was a different experience. The movie was great but the book by Grann focuses more on the Native American tribe and shares their point of view and digs even deeper into this horrible moment that was forgotten until the movie brought it back to the spotlight.
The Fifth Season
There is always going to be a book or a series that will make you realize that you were missing out on an incredible work of literature. For me, that was The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin and I hate that I was supposed to read it earlier but kept pushing it back every time. The Fifth Season is easily the best fantasy novel I have read in years and I still can’t get over it. This is a series that I feel like I will be visiting often in the coming years.
Hyperion
I am a big sci-fi fan and after reading Hyperion by Dan Simmons, I would rank it as one of the best sci-fi books I have ever read. There are multiple time-lines and point of views and Simmons does a wonderful job of making them feel like their own stories that make this book one amazing read. Simmons is an incredible writer and this is a novel that showcases his amazing talent as a writer and storyteller.
Piranesi

Even after reading hundreds of fantasy books, I am glad that I can still find amazing fantasy novels to read. Piranesi by Susanna Clarke is a modern classic and one of the best fantasy novels of the 2020s.
Clarke also wrote Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, which is also a classic fantasy novel. Piranesi is a fun adventure novel that has amazing plot twists and has cemented Clarke as one of the best fantasy authors alive.
The Devotion of Suspect X
There are always some books that you read on a whim and they end up becoming one of your favorite reads. For me, that was The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino and I still can’t get over this novel.
As a fan of mystery novels, I am always searching for great detective novels and The Devotion of Suspect X is brilliant and would make Agatha Christie proud with possibility the greatest plot twist that I have ever read!
A Man Called Ove

Normally, I am reading fantasy and sci-fi novels with a mix of mystery books here and there. But sometimes I will give a fiction novel a read because of how beloved a novel is.
This year, that was A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, a Swedish novel, and it was heartwarming and beautiful novel that I had to take breaks in between or I would be crying all over the pages. We all need to thank the translators that make it possible to read these novels in other languages because everyone needs to read these books!
The Dragonbone Chair
As a fantasy fan, I am always searching for more fantasy novels to read. And in 2024, I finally got around to reading The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams. This is the novel and fantasy series that inspired George R.R. Martin to write Game of Thrones and you can see where he got his influence from. Williams, however, keeps his Tolkien sense of innocence in his series and made this a delightful and enjoyable read.
Wandering Stars
Sometimes a good book cover and an attention grabbing blurb make me purchase a novel that I would have skipped otherwise. Wandering Stars by Tommy Orange is more than a beautiful book as it tells the plight of Native Americans across generations as they deal with trauma and what it means to be a minority in your own country. This a novel that everyone should read because Orange tells a story that will touch your soul and make you cry.
Conclusion
These are my ten favorite books of 2024 that I read. With over 60 books to choose from, this list was not an easy one to make. But these are the ten books that will stay with me the most. In 2025, I plan to read 100 books and can’t wait to read even more amazing books and share my thoughts with you!. Happy reading!
