Exit Strategy: Book Review

Today, I will be reviewing Exit Strategy by Martha Wells, the fourth book in the Murderbot Diaries. Keep reading to find out what we thought of this novella and if you should add it to your reading list!

Exit Strategy Summary

The robot ship that Murderbot has taken is diverted to a nearby station security, something that leads Murderbot to sneak through a rear airlock. Murderbot’s suspicions rings true when the ship is boarded by armed security searching for it. 

Murderbot learns that Dr. Mensah is being accused of corporate espionage by GrayCris and his gone missing. Most likely, GrayCris is behind her disappearance and that Murderbot’s investigation into GrayCris may be why Dr. Mensah has been kidnapped. 

Now, Murderbot has to work with members of Preservation in order to save Dr. Mensah and to her the crew escape the planet. But GrayCris won’t be making it easy for it. Their security is tight and they are desperate for money and will do whatever it takes to come out on top, no matter how many innocent lives it takes. Can Murderbot save everyone and escape GrayCris without anyone dying?

Commentary 

Exit Strategy is the fourth and final book in the GrayCris arc. The novel was released in 2018 and was nominated for a Hugo Award alongside the three novellas in the series. Wells declined the nominations except for Artificial Condition which ended up winning the award.

Wells was in competition with herself for the awards and that should showcase the popularity for her Murderbot Diaries series. And just like the first three novellas, Exit Strategy is another fantastic novella and the perfection conclusion to the GrayCris arc.

When I first started reading the Murderbot Diaries, I did not know I was going to enjoy it as much as I did. Murderbot’s sarcastic commentary and humor is a big reason why I couldn’t stop reading. It may be a robot bot it is has a lot to teach corporations about what it means to be human.

Conclusion

There are three more books in the series and more to come as Wells has a deal to write even more books. I don’t want this series to end anytime soon and will be revisiting these novellas in the near future. Exit Strategy is a must read and showcases why Martha Wells is one of the best sci-fi and fantasy authors out there. Happy reading!
