Books are powerful and can move us as well as change how we think. We all have read books that resonated with us and helped us become the person we are today. That is why we will be looking at the 12 life changing books according to the public.
It may not surprise you that when asked about the most life-changing books, many people mentioned religious books. We will not be including them for this list. This list includes fiction and nonfiction books, and a few self-help books.
Life Changing Books
- The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
- The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
- The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
- The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
- Atomic Habits by James Clear
- Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom
- Untamed by Glennon Doyle
- Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
- The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer
- The Giver by Lois Lowry
- The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch
The first book on the list is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Many people hold this novel dear to their heart and I do not blame them. I have read this book multiple times and love the numerous messages a reader can get from reading it.
The most popular self-help book ever written might be The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. This book seems to resonate with millions of people and is on too many lists to count. After seeing it on this list, I will finally give it a read and see if the hype is real and why Tom Brady lives by this book.

In third place is one of my all-time favorites, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This novel did change my life and made me fall in love with reading. I would put this on the top of my list and a novel that everyone should read. So far, this list pretty good.
The other book on this list that changed how I viewed the world was The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. I loved this book and the beautiful message that Haig has to say. If you have felt down or have doubted yourself or your life choices, then I recommend this novel.
Conclusion
These are the 12 life changing books according to the public. From self-help books to even classic novels, this list has a variety of books. The first half of the list are books I have read or heard of and do agree with being as life-changing. What other life-changing books should have made the list? Let us know in the comments below!

Is it too late to add one more (and make it a “baker’s dozen” of remarkable, life-changing books)? When I was in high school or college, my mom (we didn’t always get along, but she knew me pretty well, apparently!) suggested that I read Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. My mind was blown–I can’t count the number of times I’ve read it–as well as pretty much all of Kerouac’s other books.
And for some of the most exquisite writing I’ve ever read (like, every single word), I suggest Dennis Johnson’s Jesus’ Son (no–not religious, but his writing, like Kerouac’s, borders on the spiritual). I’ve been a writer all my life, but I don’t think I could write a single sentence as weirdly beautiful as his.
