Today, we will be reviewing Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells, book three in The Murderbot Diaries. Keep reading to find out what we thought of this novella and if you should add it to your reading list!

Rogue Protocol Summary

Murderbot heads to the planet Milu to collect evidence of GrayCris’s crimes. To do that, it needs to go to a terraforming facility owned by GrayCris. Murderbot befriends a humanoid bot named Miki who is similar to a pet as Murderbot secretly follows a team of humans that have been sent to assess the abandoned facility.

The facility was supposed to be abandoned and safe but when the team is attacked, Murderbot has to reveal itself to protect them. One of the members has been kidnapped and it is up to Murderbot to save them. But in order to do so, she needs the team of humans to trust her. Or else nobody is going to make it back out alive.

Commentary

Rogue Protocol is the third book in the series and the third of the fourth book in the arc. Murderbot and Preservation are still going at it with GrayCris and Murderbot intends to hold them accountable for attacking her favorite humans. But GrayCris isn’t going down without a fight.

This was the second of three books released in 2018 and was considered for the 2019 Hugo Award final ballot but Wells ultimately declined the nominations except for Artificial Condition which ended up winning the award.

I enjoyed this novella a lot and how Murderbot uses its free will to help her friends. It knows what GrayCris is doing is wrong and wants them to be held accountable. But it also knows that in order to do that, it needs to open up to the team or people or GrayCris will win otherwise.

Like every other novella in the series so far, Murderbot is its sarcastic self but there is character development. And it is watching new shows as well as the old hits. Murderbot would the perfect companion to discuss your favorite TV Show with!

Conclusion

These novellas are short and can be read in a day or two. But there is a lot of absord in these novellas. I know I will be rereading them in a few months to catch anything I have missed and because I don’t want to say goodbye to Murderbot anytime soon.

Rogue Protocol is a fantastic third book and it sets up the fourth and final book in the arc perfectly. If you haven’t read the first two books in the Murderbot Diaries, then you need to asap. Because you are missing out on an incredible series and an amazing protagonist. Happy reading!
