The fourth episode of season two of Severance had many big reveals and a change of scenery. Keep reading to find out what happened on this week’s episode of Severance!

In episode four, the MDR crew finds something surrounded by snow. They are finally outside (with permission this time) and find out that Lumon has planned an outside trip for the MDR crew. They are to hike a path that Kier himself.

After hiking for hours, they finally meet up with Milchick and are led to a campsite. And we reach the crux of this week’s episode, the standoff between Irving and Helly. Irving doesn’t trust Helly’s version of what happened when she woke up outside and questions her. But Helly retorts with a cruel remark and Irving storms off.

Later in the episode, Mark visits Helly’s tent and they have sex while Irving has left the campsite. His torch goes out and he ends up sleeping in the cold woods. After having a weird dream, Irving finds Helly in front of the waterfall and confronts her again. But this time, Irving knows that Helly isn’t Helly but her outtie, Helena.

Irving guesses (correctly) that Helena is an Eagan and wields a lot of power to be able to infiltrate the group as an outtie. Helena apologizes but Irving has other plans as he grabs her and calls out Milchick. He arrives alongside Mark and Dylan and they watch Irving drown Helena while telling Milchick to revert her back to Helly. After plunging Helena’s face in the water a few times, Helena tells Milchick (calling him Seth) to do it and he finally reverts her back to Helly.

After this, the episode keeps going and Milchick fires Irving, ending his life as we know it.

Commentary

This was by far my favorite episode of the week so far. The theory of Helly being Helena was a popular one that I suspected was true. Helly was not her usual brash self that hated Lumon with a passion in season two. Irving suspected the same thing and took drastic measures to bring Helly back. And that is what it would have took because Lumon doesn’t play fair.

We may or may not see the ramifications of what happened next episode because Severance likes to keep us guessing. The show doesn’t always follow a linear timeline and we also will be getting Mark’s early memories as he reintegrates. After this event, there will be no trust between Lumon and the remaining members of the MDR crew.

The episode was a weird one and it leaves a lot of questions that we won’t get answers to for weeks or months. We find out that Kier had a twin named Dieter and this might explain the existence of Severance and Lumon. And throughout the episodes, we saw other versions of the MDR crew, their twins, and that makes us wonder what exactly Lumon is capable of.

They can definitely clone with ease and it makes me wonder if the whole outside location wasn’t just a simulation? The show does a great part of never revealing its hand, only letting us see some of the cards. We don’t know what Lumon even does and what they are capable.

Where will the show go from here? I don’t really know except that Mark’s reintegration will be a key focus in the remaining episodes. Did Mark get Helly pregnant? Was that part of Lumon’s plan? Why did Lumon send Helena to work at Lumon as a severed employee when they did? We know that Cold Harbor is one of the reasons but we still don’t know what that is; only that Mark is essential for this mission.

I loved this week’s episode and can’t wait to see what happens next. I do think Irving will make a return before the season wraps up somehow. What did you think of this week’s episode? Let us know in the comments below!
