In today’s day and age, we know Agatha Christie for her popular mystery novels. But in her prime, she would also write short stories. Which is why we will be reviewing Midwinter Murder, a collection of Christmas-themed short stories.
Midwinter Murder includes some of Christie’s most popular short stories such as Three Blind Mice and The World’s End. These short stories are more recollections of mysteries that some of Christie’s popular protagonists have solved.
The writing style is different and it shows just how talented a writer that Christie could be at times. She tries different styles and puts her characters in uncommon situations. The Christie formula isn’t as prominent here and that makes these short stories feel like reading Christie in a parallel universe.
I enjoyed the short stories a lot and found them to be a great escape from the Christie format that many authors have used over the decades. Seeing Christie write stories that don’t have hundreds of pages to set up the plot twist was fun. The stories were still great and I would have liked to have seen some of these short stories become even bigger novels.
This feels like a farewell to some of Christie’s most beloved characters and I am glad there Christie has written dozens of novels and I have many more Christie books to read. If you like mystery novels and want a change in scenery from your usual mysteries, then these short stories will do the trick. Happy reading!
