After seeing First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston constantly on Goodreads most read books of the week list, I decided to give the book a read. Find out what we thought of this novel and if you should read it next.
First Lie Wins Summary
Evie Porter has the perfect life and everything a girl can ask for and more. But unfortunately, Evie Porter isn’t read, just a mask that Lucca is wearing as she works for the mysterious Mr. Smith
Lucca is sent on a mission to learn everything about Ryan Summers. After botching up her last mission, Lucca is under a lot of pressure as Mr. Smith tests her loyalty.
When a women pretending to be Lucca shows up in Virginia, Lucca starts to wonder how safe she is and what Mr. Smith’s plan is. Can Lucca figure out what Mr. Smith is driving at and why Ryan Summers was the target before it is too late?
Commentary
From the first page, Elston’s novel will have you hooked. You have very little idea of what is going on but every word piques your interest more and more. Evie Porter is not who she says she is and we slowly learn what her situation is.
Reese Witherspoon chose this novel for her book club, making it a mainstream success in the process. And I am glad that she did because Elston is a fantastic author. It is hard to believe this is her debut adult novel.
This novel has more plot twists than I can count and when you think you have it figured out, you don’t. I almost correctly guessed the major plot twist but was one away. Elston’s storytelling ability makes this a must read and one of the best novels of 2024.
Conclusion
It is easy to see why this novel was trending all of 2024. Once you read it, you will most likely recommend it to someone else and have to talk about it with them.
Novels like these are what made me love thrillers and Elston is an author I will be looking out for in the future. I recommend this to fans of mystery and thriller novels and as a one of the best books released in 2024.
