December flew by and I was able to read a couple of books on my to-read list and make progress towards my reading goal. Keep reading to find out what books I read in December!
After a few months of reading only a couple of books, I was able to get back into reading more books. While I did only read four books, two of them were over a thousand pages.

The first books I read in December was Wandering Stars by Tommy Orange. This novel has a beautiful book cover and was one of the books that jumped out to me that released in 2024.
After reading this novel, I was speechless. Orange tells a harrowing tale of racism and trauma that haunts a family for generations. The book tells the story of Native Americans suffering for over a century and the importance of identity and home.
We often forget the plight of Native Americans in a country that has tried its hardest to erase them from history. Tommy Orange’s novel brings them back into the spotlight and tells their story, while writing one of the best novels of 2024 in the progress.
If you should know one thing about me, it is that I am a huge fantasy fan. Brandon Sanderson’s novels are always fun to read and Wind and Truth did not disappoint. The fifth novel in The Stormlight Archive series was released in December and I had to read it as soon as possible.

The novel picks up where the fourth book ended and showcases the ten days before Dalinar has to face Odium. But Odium is not the same person as before and Dalinar has to find out the truth behind the Honor’s disappearance if he wants a chance to win.
This is a short summary of the book and doesn’t do the novel justice. Sanderson is great at fleshing out multiple characters and telling their story while pushing the plot forward. If you haven’t read the previous novels, then I would recommend reading them first or this novel will be very confusing.
The third novel I decided to read was 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. I have seen this novel in many bookstores and finally decided to read my first Murakami book. If only I knew what I was in for.
1Q84 tells the story of two characters that are transported to a parallel world and are caught in a conspiracy involving a cult and Little People who have magical powers. The novel touches on sensitive topics and is not an easy read. Murakami doesn’t handle these subjects well and it will infuriate many readers as a result.
I enjoyed the first half of the novel that had a plot and moved forward towards it. But Murakami tends to have paragraphs that drag on and it gets repetitive fast. Ultimately, the novel is about two people trying to meet each other for the first time since childhood and stuff happens in between. I will not be reading any more Murakami novels and will pretend I didn’t read this one. I do not recommend this novel to anyone that enjoys reading for fun.
Lastly, I read The Serpent Sea by Martha Wells, the second novel in The Books of the Raksura. I recently discovered Wells and I have been diving through her books since. She has fun world building and I enjoy how unique her characters are. They have real world problems and if it wasn’t for the different creatures in her books, I would forget that this is a fantasy novel.
I enjoyed The Serpent Sea and can’t wait to finish this series by her. While this series won’t make it to my favorite fantasy series, it was a fun read and I am glad I gave it a chance. It is a great break for some of the more serious books that I tend to read.
Conclusion
These are the four books that I read in December. I started off the month with Wandering Stars and then read a couple of fantasy novels as well as 1Q84. I enjoyed most of the books and was able to read more than I usually did. How many of these books have you read? Let us know in the comments below!
