Fantasy author George RR Martin has been working on The Winds of Winter for 13 years and now he believes that he may never finish the novel.

That isn’t the best thing fans wanted to hear but at least Martin is being honest with everyone. If you have been following news regarding The Winds of Winter, then you might not be that surprised. I know I wasn’t.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Martin discussed on the movies that he was working on but the discussion turned to The Winds of Winter. People wanted to know how Martin was juggling working on movies and writing The Winds of Winter.

Unfortunately, I am 13 years late,” said Martin. “Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time.”

“But that’s still a priority,” he continued. “A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!”

As a fan of A Song of Ice and Fire, it is disheartening to see Martin blame everyone but himself. 13 years is a long time for a novel and Martin is still nowhere near finished. He has instead focused on writing prequels and working on movies and is baffled when we believe he won’t ever finish writing the book.

The Winds of Winter update

In 2023, Martin said that he was about 75 percent done. We haven’t gotten an update since then on the progress of the book. What we have gotten is news of new movies and yet another prequel. Writing a book is not easy and there is a reason many authors bunker down to finish their book. But Martin seems to be juggling multiple projects and doesn’t seem to prioritize The Winds of Winter as much as we would like him to.

I don’t know about you but I have given up hope on The Winds of Winter. If it is ever released, it will be a happy surprise but I don’t expect to see it until 2030 at this rate. Martin has been great at deflecting blame and I don’t expect this to change anytime soon.
