The 2024 year is coming to an end and that means the award seasons are just around the corner. And today, we found out the 2024 Booker Prize Shortlist and which six books were selected.
The shortlist was released in London and for the first time in 55 years, five of the six books selected are by female authors. Ironically enough, I think the winner will be lone male author because James by Percival Everett seems to be the novel of the year according to many.

Last year’s winner was Prophet Song by Paul Lynch, a novel that most people didn’t hear of until it was selected as the winner. That does indicate that the winners are often novels that go under the radar. Last year, three of the six books nominated were written by an author named Paul and had two female authors nominated. You can see the full list of the 2024 Book Prize Shortlist below!
- Creation Lake by Rachel Kushner
- James by Percival Everett
- The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden
- Orbital by Samantha Harvey
- Held by Anne Michaels
- Stone Yard Devotional by Charlotte Wood
I am surprised that Wandering Stars by Tommy Orange wasn’t nominated and Playground by Richard Powers also didn’t make the cut after making the nominations list. With so many amazing novels out there, some will be overlooked or just not good enough.
The winners of the award will be announced in London on November 12 and the winner will receive 50,000 pounds, or about $66,000. Books that go on to win this award see a surge in sales and that should be true this time around too. Will it be James or will we be surprised as another book takes the coveted award?

Something that surprises me: Romance is widely read, to say the least. However, there are not so many important prizes going to romance books. Or books on TikTok or Insta for that matter. What’s your view on this?

Good question. I think it has to do with the overall message and impact of books that are selected for these awards. Romance novels tend to be formulaic and don’t touch on subjects that books that are selected for these awards do. A good comparison would be superhero movies. They are (or were) popular and yet almost never won any awards.
