The Lord of the Rings movies are making a return as Warner Bros. has decided to release a new live-action movie series.
Peter Jackson, the director of the original The Lord of the Rings trilogy, will be partnering with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens to make the new movies. The first one is set to release in 2026 and will focus on Gollum.
The project is currently in the early stages of script development from writers Walsh and Boyens, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, and will “explore storylines yet to be told,” David Zaslav said.
Fans and the press found out that a new The Lord of the Rings movie was going to be released in a press release from Warner Bros. on Thursday morning. The first movie will be titled Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and will be directed and Andy Serkis.
“It is an honor and a privilege to travel back to Middle–earth with our good friend and collaborator, Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that stinker — Gollum!,” said Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh said in a statement. “As life long fans of Professor Tolkien’s vast mythology, we are proud to be working with [WBD film chiefs] Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy and the entire team at Warner Bros. on another epic adventure!”
“Yesssss, Precious. The time has come once more to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle–earth Peter, Fran and Philippa,” said Serkis. “With Mike and Pam, and the Warner Bros team on the quest as well, alongside WETA and our film making family in New Zealand, it’s just all too delicious… .”

The hype train for this movie is starting off well and the best decision was to bring back Peter Jackson. J.R.R Tolkien’s classic novel will be given a newer movie with better technology. That should lead to a beautiful visual experience that I can’t wait for.
Starting the reboot with Gollum is an interesting approach and I am eager to see how this is done. Anyone who has read the books has always wanted to see it from the point of view of Gollum. One thing I am certain is that the word “precious” will be said a lot once that movie hits the theaters.
The trend of rebooting popular 2000s movies is the strategy by Warner Bros. to make money and honestly, it is a good one. That feels like the decade that is up next and with a Harry Potter franchise reboot on its way, we will have two of the biggest movie franchises getting a reboot in 2026. What will be the next big 2000s movie franchise to be rebooted?
As a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings, I will be eagerly waiting for this movie. If nothing else, this is a great reason to rewatch the classic trilogy directed by Peter Jackson. I just want to see Gollum irrelevantly intrude on an awards show.
