What happens when the line between real and fiction is blurred? Today, we will be looking at Agatha Christie’s disappearance for 11 days in 1926. Keep reading to find out more about this stranger than fiction event!

Agatha Christie’s Disappearance on December 3, 1926

On the night of December 3,1926, bestselling author Agatha Christie left her home in Sunningdale, Berkshire and got into a car and drove off. Nobody knew where she went or what happened to her. And to this day, the mystery of Christie’s disappearance has never been fully explained.

When the tabloids found out, they had a field day. By 1926, Christie had released 6 novels and most recently The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, earlier that year. She was a celebrity and a known figure. Everyone was wondering what happened to Christie and who was behind her disappearance?

While Christie’s literary career was going well, her personal life was not. Her husband Archibald Christie, or Archie, had an affair with another woman and asked Christie for a divorce in August.

And just before her disappearance, Christie and Archie had an argument. Archie left to hang out with his friends for the weekend. Christie tucked in her seven-year old in bed and drove off into the night.

The next day, her car was discovered abandoned with Christie’s clothes inside at Newlands Corner. We have an account of what the police said which you can see below.

‘The car was found in such a position as to indicate that some unusual proceeding had taken place, the Car being found half-way down a grassy slope well off the main road with its bonnet buried in some bushes, as if it had got out of control. In the Car was found a Fur Coat, a Dressing Case containing various articles of ladies wearing apparel, and a driving license indicating that the owner was Mrs. Agatha Christie of Sunningdale, Berks.’

A Real Life Mystery

All of this felt like one of Christie’s books and many people assumed the worst possible outcome. A man had said he had seen Agatha Christie that night and said that she was ‘sparsely dressed for such an inclement morning, and that she appeared strange in her manner.’

The newspapers were covering this intensely and the many people joined to find Christie. There were many theories thrown out, with people suggesting that Christie’s husband kidnapped her, Christie drowned herself, or this was all a publicity stunt for her next book. Arthur Conan Doyle tried to help locating her by consulting a medium as he was a spiritualist.

After 11 days, Christie was finally found at a hotel. Someone recognized her at the Swan Hydro hotel. Christie had apparently checked in under a name of her husband’s mistress and was unable to give any account of the 11 days she was missing. She was suffering from memory loss and nobody knew how or why she disappeared.

What happened?

To this day, this mystery bewilders many. The disappearance shocked the world and everyone imagined the worst-case scenario. Was this all a ploy to get back at her husband or something more sinister?

While we will never know, we can speculate that Christie was never kidnapped. Her failing marriage and the latest argument with her husband may have led to a mental breakdown. We never really know what goes in in someone’s mind. To Christie, it may have felt like her whole life was crumbling down and may have driven off without a destination and her mind occupied.

I do believe that Christie was aware of what transpired the past 11 days because she does take steps that prevent her from being recognized. Using a fake name which happens to be the name of the mistress of her husband tells us that this was what she was thinking about.

Maybe it was all a ploy to get back at her husband. Many elements of this do feel like a novel and that was her full-time job. She knows better than anybody how to frame someone and her husband was suspected by many to be behind the disappearance.

Conclusion

To this day, Agatha Christie’s disappearance was never addressed or explained by the author. We are only left with the clues from this event with no real answers. The disappearance was publicly followed and has fascinated many people over the decades. We are glad that Christie was able to resume writing mystery novels and went on to become the bestselling author of all time!
