A name that many readers will recognize on this list is Amor Towles. His latest book Table for Two is a collection of six short stories, taking place in either the early 2000s in New York or in 1930s in Hollywood. The stories take place between two people at a table, thus the name. If you have read any novel by Towles, then you’ll love this novel as it captures why readers love Towles and his writing style.

One of Us Knows

If you are a fan of murder novels with a bunch of twists, then you will love One of Us Knows by Alyssa Cole. Kenetria “Ken” Nash has accepted a job as a caretaker of a gothic castle on a deserted island on the Hudson River. One thing you need to know about Ken is that she has struggled with dissociative identity disorder, causing her to switch between multiple personalities with no warning.

It has been getting harder and harder for Ken to keep her personalities in check. When a man from Ken’s past is found dead inside the home, Ken has to clear her name, knowing full well that she could have committed the murder, turning to her multiple personalities for help.

Knife

Salman Rushdie was stabbed multiple times in August 2022 while speaking at an event in western New York. His memoir Knife is about his experience of the violent attack and the after effects of the attack. From PTSD to losing sight in his left eye and limited mobility in his left hand, Rushdie opens up about the attack and how it affected him.

The trial for the alleged attacker is still ongoing and has been postponed because of the book because it may be potential evidence. This book was something that Rushdie felt like he had to write. “This was a necessary book for me to write,” Rushdie said of Knife. “A way to take charge of what happened, and to answer violence with art.”

The Demon of Unrest

Another big name author on the list that fans will be flocking to is Erik Larson and his latest book The Demon of Unrest. This time, Larson’s book takes place just before the start of the U.S. Civil War. More specifically, the book focuses on the five-month period between the “November 1860 election of President Abraham Lincoln and the April 1861 surrender of Fort Sumter.”

Larson focuses on a time where the future of the United States was uncertain and civil war was around the corner. We get to look back at this chaotic time period and are shown journals, slave ledgers, plantation records, and secret correspondence to understand what everyone was thinking and feeling.
