Comedian and late night host Jimmy Fallon is reviving his book club with a twist.

On Monday, Fallon announced on his show The Tonight Show that the Fallon Book Club will be returning. But instead of letting people vote to decide the book to read, Fallon will be doing a bracket.

“If you know me, you know I’m always looking for a good book to read,” Fallon said. “And that’s why I’m very excited to announce this. We can vote round-by-round until we narrow them down to the Elite Eight books.”

The gimmick by Fallon coincides with March Madness, an NCAA basketball tournament bracket. Books will be facing off against each other and the one with the highest votes will make to the next round. And if you are still confused about this, don’t worry as Fallon clarifies.

“I’m not saying this is the eight, or this is the eight. It could be this,” the host said while rearranging books into piles. “These could be the eight! Until we get to the Final Four, then the Terrific Two, until we’re left with one winner – The Fallon Book Club Spring Read!”

Fallon also launched a social media for his book club called FallonBookClub. While I think this is a great idea, I don’t like the gimmick and revolving it around March Madness. Many readers have no clue what March madness is what it has to do with this book club.

I think Fallon just wanted to make the return of his book club interesting and make it an event. And right now, March Madness is in full effect and that’s what he and his time gravitated towards. It feels a bit overdone and takes away from the focus on the book club itself.

With the recent success of book clubs, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Fallon is trying to join his friends. Running a book club takes commitment and a team that cares about books. We don’t know if that is true for Fallon and his team but we will find out in the coming months.

I am all for the extra attention that Fallon will provide for authors and books. And just like Oprah or Reese Witherspoon, I want him to give the spotlight to new authors and books. Let’s hope this book club succeeds and doesn’t shut down like Fallon’s last book club.
