Underrated Classics

The first thing that stands out from this list is that many of these classics aren’t your usual classics. Many lists won’t have these books or even if they do, it will be down the list.

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

My favorite on this list is The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. Based on her own experiences, Cisneros tells the story of a 12-year-old Chicana girl growing up in the Hispanic quarter of Chicago. The novel tackles issues such as growing up a woman in a poor community. Social class, race, identity, and growing up Mexican American in Chicago.

Another classic that many people may recognize on the list is David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. The novel follows the story of David Copperfield from infancy to adulthood. It is considered an autobiography as much of the novel is based on Dicken’s own life. Dickens himself called the novel “the triumph of the art of Dickens.”
