Have you ever read a book when you were younger that stuck with you over time? YA books can do that, too! Though some of these books are from a decade ago or longer, they still hold up and are fun to read! Check them out these books that will transport you to the past!

Speak By Laurie Halse Anderson

Speak is the story of Melinda Sordino. She’s starting high school and has trauma that no one knows about. She has no friends, no one wants to be around her, and everyone dislikes her because she busted a party that people loved. Now, no one wants to have anything to do with her.

What they don’t know is that she was raped at this party. At school, she discovers a love of art and slowly begins to heal and open herself up to life again. As she comes into herself, she has another violent encounter with her attacker. However, now she can stand up for herself and realizes she’s done letting people hurt her, and she needs to speak.

This book is one of the best books of 1999, and it helped victims of violent attacks realize that they could speak and have a voice. Not only does it have nostalgia, but it’s also got an important lesson.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

We Were Liars revolves around Cadence. She’s the eldest grandchild of a wealthy man. Said man owns an island, and his three daughters come every summer to enjoy a vacation. Cadence, her cousins Johnny and Mirren, and a friend, Gat, get involved in pranks, adventures, and fun.

But one summer, Cadence can’t remember anything. When she visited in the summer of seventeen, everything had changed, and her cousins were different. Gat is different. She doesn’t know why, but slowly, she remembers summer fifteen, when something terrible happened. Something that changed her family forever.

While this book wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, many have contributed this book to getting them to read again and has been a nostalgia read for many more.

Cinder By Marissa Meyer

Linh Cinder is forced to be under the guardianship of a ruthless stepmother. She has two stepsisters; while one of her sisters is unkind, the other treats her kindly and considers her a friend. She’s a cyborg and discriminated against even though she’s the best mechanic.

While working in the marketplace, she meets the prince and hides her identity. When her sister becomes sick and Cinder volunteers for research, they learn she is immune. With people dying around her and the stakes increasing, Cinder learns truths about herself that she never knew and realizes she needs to be a part of something far more significant than she thought.

Cinder is the first book in the Lunar Chronicles and has been loved by many. You’ll find it on many reading challenges and lists for nostalgia, and people come back to it many times. It’s worth the read!
