If you are going on a road trip and need a book or two to read, then look no further. We have compiled a list of nine books to read on a road trip. Jeep reading to find out which books made our list!
First and foremost, not everyone can read in a car. If you are like me, then you also get car sick while reading. That is why we have audiobooks. And yes, they count as reading.
The novels on this list are either about road trips, traveling, or just make for a good read. Most of them are a reasonable length except for The Hobbit. But that is the ultimate adventure book alongside The Lord of the Rings and had to be included. You can see the full list below!
Nine Books to Read on a Road Trip
- Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig
- American Gods by Neil Gaiman
- Travels With Charley In Search of America by John Steinbeck
- The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles
- YellowFace by R. F. Kuang
- Rule of the Bone by Russell Banks
- A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole
- The Hobbit by J .R. R. Tolkien
- Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah
American Gods

A novel that does have a road trip is American Gods by Neil Gaiman. It is a brilliant novel about gods and what happens to them when they are forgotten. I have yet to read a Gaiman novel that I didn’t love and this is one of his most popular novels, but not his best in my opinion.
Travels With Charlie In Search of America
A novel that was made for road trips has to be Travels With Charlie In Search of America. The novel by John Steinbeck that is a record of his road trip across America in the 1960’s with his poodle Charley.
Yellowface

A novel that had many people talking was R. F. Kuang’s Yellowface. It follows two friends, one white named June, one Asian named Athena, and plagiarism. When Athena passes away one night, June steals her manuscript and edits and publishes the novel as her own. What follows is the aftermath as June tries to hide her secret as she navigates the publishing world.
A Confederacy of Dunces

One of my favorite novels has to be A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. It is about an overweight and unemployed 30-year named Ignatius who lives with his mother. Ignatius is forced to get a job to help pay the bills and what follows is a hilarious story that is witty yet ridiculous.
