I am always eager to read fantasy novels and discover new worlds. And with so many new and old classics, there have been many amazing books that I have read. Keep reading for my five favorite fantasy books of all time!
Choosing five novels was not easy. I decided to pick the ones that I enjoyed the most and think about often. All of these are series and I decided to list the series instead of one book in the series.
Many of these fantasy series will be familiar to you as they are popular works of fiction. Some of them are still ongoing. You can see the full list below!
My Five Favorite Fantasy Books of All Time
- The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
- A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin
- The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie
- Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
- His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
The Lord of the Rings

f you love fantasy novels, then you have to read The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. Not only is it an amazing series but it is the formula that many fantasy authors have used to write their novels. If you have read a bunch of fantasy novels, then you have most likely come across troupes that were popularized by Tolkien.
The First Law

One of my favorite series on the list is The First Law by Joe Abercrombie. It is a gritty and bloody series that feels like it belongs on HBO. The characters are interesting and the protagonist has his moments. It has inspired novels that have copied the gritty and violent style that has come to define this series.
Mistborn

A surprise series on this list is Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn books. It is a more recent series that pushes the genre forward. It has a multitude of characters and the novel has a time jump as well as in a change of protagonists.
Those are stuff you don’t see in many fantasy novels because it is a lot to juggle and fans aren’t always receptive to such changes. But Sanderson makes this work with ease as well as making the newer books feel fresh.
Conclusion
These are my five favorite fantasy books of all time. How many of these books have you read or plan to read? Let us know in the comments below!
Perfect list
I want to eventually read ‘Mistborn’ and ‘The Blade Itself,’ even though I’m not a huge fantasy reader. My mom and brother really like ‘Mistborn’ and my dad loves listening to Joe Abercrombie’s series on audiobook, along with ‘The Witcher.’
