Travis Baldree is trading the comforts of cozy fantasy for a dungeon escape with a very unusual complication: a human baby.
The Legends & Lattes author’s upcoming novel, Four Bastards and a Baby, introduces a dangerous new setting and an unlikely group of adventurers. Baldree’s official website identifies it as a LitRPG adventure—a change of direction that gives both his existing readers and fans of game-inspired fantasy something to watch.
When Does Four Bastards and a Baby Come Out?
Four Bastards and a Baby is scheduled for publication on August 10, 2027, from Tor Books.
The publisher’s U.S. listing currently gives the hardcover a length of 560 pages. That edition will include illustrated endpapers, a foil case stamp, and eight full-page interior illustrations.
Those details make this a substantial adventure to add to your 2027 reading list.
What Is Four Bastards and a Baby About?
The story follows Brindle, a half-devil trapped in the Deepdown, a shifting underground labyrinth. He receives a possible route to freedom: carry a mysterious egg upward through twelve dangerous floors.
Naturally, he needs help.
His companions include a giantess who has renounced violence, a tinker being consumed by shadow, and two sisters with their own complications. One sister despises Brindle; the other is imprisoned in a sword.
Then the egg hatches, and a human baby emerges.
Suddenly, escaping a dungeon means protecting someone who cannot protect herself. The premise adds a practical problem to the usual adventure setup: surviving the next encounter becomes much harder when your party is responsible for an infant.
Why Travis Baldree Writing LitRPG Makes Sense
For readers who discovered Baldree through cozy fantasy, the announcement might sound unexpected. His professional history helps explain the move.
In PEOPLE’s October 26 cover reveal, Baldree discussed his years creating action role-playing games and narrating LitRPG audiobooks. He described writing the new novel as “like coming home.”
That background makes the genre shift especially interesting. Designing an engaging game and writing an engaging novel require different skills, but both depend on choices that matter, obstacles that evolve, and a reason to keep going.
The question is how Baldree will bring those interests together on the page.
Is This Another Cozy Fantasy?
Readers should expect a change in stakes. Baldree’s website explicitly distinguishes the new book from his cozy fantasy work.
Even so, the setup leaves room for something his existing audience may appreciate: relationships between unusual people forced to rely on one another.
That is the part of the premise that interests me most. A dungeon can supply danger, but a difficult group dynamic gives that danger a personal cost. A companion’s refusal to fight, a hostile relationship, or the arrival of a baby can make cooperation more complicated than simply assembling the strongest possible team.
Whether that produces warmth, tension, comedy, or all three will depend on the finished novel.
What Kind of LitRPG Should Readers Expect?
The genre label is confirmed by the author’s site. The precise mechanics remain a question.
The available descriptions do not establish how prominently character statistics, leveling, classes, or skill screens will feature. It is too early to promise a particular balance between game systems and character-driven adventure.
If you are new to these terms, our guide to LitRPG vs. progression fantasy explains what each label tells you about a book.
Why It Belongs on Your Radar
What makes Four Bastards and a Baby worth following is the combination of a familiar fantasy challenge and an awkward responsibility. Escaping is one objective. Getting everyone out together is a much harder one.
For me, the appeal is seeing Baldree explore that tension in a genre connected to his earlier work. The premise offers plenty of room for tactical problems, clashing personalities, and a party whose biggest complication may also become its strongest bond.
