Harry Bosch’s next investigation takes him back to a place he has every reason to avoid.
The Hollow by Michael Connelly releases on October 27, 2026, in the United States, with the retired detective investigating a death connected to his childhood. For readers drawn to mysteries where the investigator has something personal at stake, that premise gives this release an especially compelling hook.
This is a release preview based on the announced premise, rather than a review of the finished novel.
When Does The Hollow Come Out?
The publication dates differ by region:
| Region | Release date |
|---|---|
| United States and Canada | October 27, 2026 |
| Australia and New Zealand | October 27, 2026 |
| United Kingdom and Ireland | November 5, 2026 |
The author’s official book announcement confirms those dates. Readers who encountered an earlier November 3 announcement should use the updated schedule above.
What Is The Hollow About?
Following his mother’s murder, a young Harry Bosch spent time at MacLaren Children’s Center. Years later, a settlement involving former residents brings that period of his life back into focus.
Mickey Haller, Bosch’s half-brother, delivers news of the settlement. But the money prompts Bosch to revisit something far more troubling: the death of another boy, known as Chops.
According to the publisher’s synopsis, Bosch believes the boy’s killing was concealed. His investigation leads toward someone whose violence may have continued long after their paths first crossed.
The title refers to a space beneath a staircase associated with punishment at the facility. That gives “the hollow” a disturbing significance before readers even open the book.
Why This Harry Bosch Premise Stands Out
What interests me most about this setup is the distance between remembering an injustice and being able to investigate it.
A child living inside an abusive institution has very little power. An experienced investigator revisiting that history has knowledge and tools his younger self lacked. The tension comes from what those tools can still accomplish after so much time has passed.
There is also a difficult question at the center of the premise: what does accountability look like decades later? A financial settlement can acknowledge harm, but an unanswered death leaves a different kind of unfinished business.
Those are promising questions for a crime novel. They give the mystery emotional weight beyond identifying a culprit. Whether Connelly delivers on that promise is something to assess after reading.
Formats, Audiobook Narrators and Page Count
Little, Brown and Company lists the U.S. hardcover at 352 pages. Hardcover, ebook, audiobook download and a large-print paperback edition appear among the publisher’s formats.
The audiobook is narrated by Titus Welliver and Cameron Monaghan, as confirmed on Connelly’s official book page.
Choose an edition by its own listing, particularly when comparing U.S. and UK copies, since publication details can vary across markets.
Should You Add The Hollow to Your Reading List?
If your favorite mysteries combine a difficult investigation with a deeply personal reason to pursue it, this is a release worth considering.
The childhood connection is the strongest reason to keep an eye on it. There is room here for both a cold-case investigation and an examination of what it means to return to a painful chapter of your life.
