Barnes & Noble has revealed its 2026 Book of the Year finalists, with 16 titles competing for the bookseller-selected honor. Announced on October 22, the shortlist includes Barbara Kingsolver, Colson Whitehead, Caro Claire Burke and David Byrne. The winner will be announced on November 12, 2026.
The selection spans six novels, seven nonfiction books and three books for young readers. That makes it useful for more than following an award: readers can browse it for their next book-club selection, a nonfiction recommendation or a gift.

Where Should You Start With the Shortlist?
Rather than treating every finalist as a book you need to read, use your favorite kind of story to narrow the field.
For historical fiction, Land follows a father and son mapping Ireland in 1865. Readers drawn to crime fiction might prefer Cool Machine, which concludes Whitehead’s Harlem trilogy against the backdrop of 1980s New York.
For a different mood, Yesteryear centers on a lifestyle influencer whose carefully constructed existence unravels. Those premises offer three distinct ways into the fiction selection: a journey through history, a changing city and a satire of an apparently perfect life.
The nonfiction finalists offer similarly different starting points. Strangers examines the breakdown of a marriage, while Sleeping Beauties explores how overlooked ideas can find new life. London Falling follows a family’s search for answers after a young man’s death. Penguin Random House’s finalist announcement provides more background on these selections.
My suggestion is to choose one book that fits your usual reading habits and another that stretches them. A shortlist becomes more interesting when it introduces you to something you would otherwise have walked past.
How Is Barnes & Noble’s Book of the Year Chosen?
Barnes & Noble booksellers nominate books they are enthusiastic about recommending, and their votes determine the winner. The award began in 2019.
That bookseller perspective is what makes this list worth browsing. A personal recommendation can give readers a reason to investigate a book beyond its cover or a familiar author’s name. Here, that enthusiasm produces a shortlist that puts novels, memoir, history, cooking and children’s stories in the same conversation.
The Book of the Year honor is separate from Barnes & Noble’s Discover Prize, which focuses on debut fiction.
When Will the 2026 Winner Be Announced?
Barnes & Noble will announce its 2026 Book of the Year on November 12, 2026. As of October 23, the winner has not been revealed.
Until then, the finalists offer plenty of possibilities for readers building their year-end reading lists. Which book would get your vote?
