The Dungeon Crawler Carl TV show is bringing Matt Dinniman’s chaotic science fantasy series to Peacock. But as the adaptation takes shape, the author has a clear message for readers: the books come first.

Speaking at New York Comic Con, Dinniman addressed his priorities as the series expands beyond publishing. For readers following Carl and Princess Donut’s adventures, his answer offers some welcome reassurance.

Matt Dinniman Says the Books Remain His First Priority

“My number one priority is and always will be the books themselves, no matter what IPs are here,” Dinniman said, according to PEOPLE’s October 19 report.

That commitment matters as a successful series becomes a larger entertainment property. A television adaptation creates opportunities to introduce new audiences to the story, while existing readers are still invested in where the novels go next.

His comment establishes a priority. It does not provide a publication schedule or guarantee that adaptation work will have no effect on his time.

Preserving the Books’ Tone Is Another Major Concern

Dinniman has also discussed what he wants the television version to retain.

In an October 14 interview with Space.com, he identified tone as the most important element to preserve—and a particularly difficult part of the adaptation.

That distinction is useful. Keeping the novels his first priority concerns his work as an author; preserving their tone concerns how the story makes the jump to television.

There is a substantial creative challenge here. A deadly competition can supply action, and a talking cat can supply jokes. Making the comedy and danger work together requires more than reproducing individual scenes.

From an adaptation perspective, the relationship between spectacle and suffering is especially important. Viewers need to enjoy Carl’s ingenuity while understanding the cruelty of a system that turns survival into entertainment. That is an editorial assessment of the challenge facing the show, rather than a confirmed description of its scripts.

Who Is Making the Dungeon Crawler Carl TV Show?

The adaptation is a live-action Peacock series from Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door. Chris Yost and Eric Heisserer are its co-showrunners.

Dinniman told Space.com that both have read the books and appreciate them. He also confirmed that he is serving as a co-executive producer and expects to remain involved throughout production.

Author involvement provides a connection to the source material, although the finished series will ultimately show how that collaboration translates to the screen.

Jeff Hays Will Voice Princess Donut

One of the adaptation’s most significant casting announcements concerns Princess Donut.

Jeff Hays, the narrator of the Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks, will voice the character in the live-action series. His casting was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July, as PEOPLE reported at the time.

For audiobook listeners, that brings a familiar performer into the adaptation. It also gives the television series an established connection to how many fans first experienced these characters.

Does the Dungeon Crawler Carl TV Show Have a Release Date?

A premiere date has not been announced in the reporting available as of October 19, 2026.

The latest production update points to filming in 2027. Variety’s October 10 report, indexed by IMDb, described that planned shooting window following comments from Universal Global Television executive Kelsey Balance at New York Comic Con.

A filming year should not be treated as a release year. Readers should wait for Peacock to announce when the series will actually arrive.

Where Should New Readers Start?

Start with Dungeon Crawler Carl, the first novel.

The series follows Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, through a lethal alien-run competition. Its LitRPG format incorporates game mechanics into a continuing survival story.

Penguin Random House’s official series page offers an overview of the books. For the reading sequence, see our Dungeon Crawler Carl books in order guide.

For now, Dinniman’s comments give readers two clear points to follow: his continuing commitment to the novels and the television team’s effort to carry their distinctive tone onto the screen.
