Spoiler warning: Major spoilers for the 2026 film and Jane Austen’s novel.

Elinor and Marianne Dashwood reach hopeful but different conclusions in Sense and Sensibility (2026). Elinor and Edward Ferrars finally acknowledge their love, while Marianne’s relationship with Colonel Brandon points toward a future together without showing an engagement or wedding.

Georgia Oakley’s adaptation stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor and Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne.

The distinction between the sisters’ endings matters: one romance receives an unmistakable resolution, while the other is allowed more time.

What Happens to Elinor and Edward?

Edward’s commitment to Lucy Steele keeps him and Elinor apart. After his family disinherits him, however, Lucy marries his brother Robert, who has become the heir. Edward is free to marry Elinor.

The misunderstanding comes from Lucy becoming “Mrs. Ferrars.” Elinor initially assumes that means she has married Edward. In this adaptation, Mrs. Jennings supplies the crucial correction after Edward has left the cottage.

As Entertainment Weekly explains in its account of the film’s changes, Elinor then runs after Edward, and they confess their love and kiss.

That pursuit gives Elinor an active role in resolving her own story. Her restraint has never meant that she feels less deeply than Marianne. At the end, she finally lets another person see the strength of those feelings.

One way to read the scene is that Elinor’s growth involves giving herself permission to want something openly. Being responsible for other people does not require her to surrender her own happiness.

Does Marianne Die?

No. Marianne becomes seriously ill after walking in the rain, but she recovers.

Her illness follows the collapse of her hopes for Willoughby. He has rejected her and chosen the wealthy Miss Grey. His treatment of Eliza also exposes a pattern of harm that extends beyond Marianne’s heartbreak.

This makes recovery more than a return to physical health. Marianne has to reconsider the person she loved and the meaning she attached to his attention.

Her mistake was trusting a man whose appeal exceeded his integrity. A useful reading of her ending is that she can preserve her emotional openness while becoming more careful about whom she trusts.

Does Marianne End Up With Colonel Brandon?

The film suggests that Marianne and Brandon could build a relationship, but it stops short of showing them formally engaged or married.

JustWatch’s ending explanation describes their quieter closing conversation alongside Elinor and Edward’s more explicit romantic resolution.

That difference leaves room for Marianne’s recovery. A promising relationship need not become an immediate commitment, especially after the disappointment she has experienced.

Brandon’s patience also gives their possible future a different foundation from her attachment to Willoughby. The question becomes whether affection can develop through trust and attention, rather than whether someone can reproduce the excitement of a first attraction.

The most precise answer is that Marianne’s ending is hopeful, with a future beside Brandon implied.

What Happens During the Duel?

Brandon and Willoughby duel after Willoughby’s drunken visit during Marianne’s illness. Willoughby misses; Brandon fires upward. Both survive.

Marianne’s concern for Brandon helps signal her changing feelings.

The scene can be read as a moment when she recognizes emotion beneath his reserve. Yet the danger itself should not be mistaken for proof that a relationship will succeed. What matters to their potential future is the care and patience that can continue after the confrontation.

Why Are There No Weddings?

The 2026 film does not show either sister’s wedding. Elinor and Edward’s cliff-top kiss and proposal establish their commitment, while Marianne and Brandon’s future remains less definite.

My reading is that this gives the sisters different emotional timelines. Elinor can finally express a love she has been suppressing. Marianne needs space to discover what she wants after heartbreak.

A wedding would provide a neat visual endpoint. Leaving one relationship at a beginning instead invites viewers to consider happiness as something that develops over time.

What Does the Ending Mean?

The ending brings the title’s two ideas into conversation. Sound judgment can coexist with powerful feeling, and romantic hope can survive disappointment.

Elinor’s story challenges the assumption that composure means an absence of passion. Marianne’s story asks whether passion alone is enough to judge another person’s character.

Their experiences also make the sisters’ relationship central to an interpretation of the ending. Romantic partners may offer new possibilities, but the sisters have already shared the work of surviving loss and uncertainty.
