Charlaine Harris is opening the door to a new magical world. Hold My Spellbook, the forthcoming novel from the author whose Sookie Stackhouse books inspired HBO’s True Blood, launches a fantasy series built around a young mage, dangerous family politics and a marriage arranged for survival.

The book arrives in the United States on February 9, 2027, from Saga Press. An October 14 exclusive cover reveal in PEOPLE offers a fresh look at the project, which Harris describes as portal romantasy.

When Is Hold My Spellbook Coming Out?

What Is Hold My Spellbook About?

Hannalyn Sevrene has grown up in our world, unaware of the full truth about her origins. At twenty, she crosses a portal into a realm connected to the visions she has experienced.

There, she discovers that she is the surviving mage of a family devastated by violence. Rival houses see her magical abilities as something they can exploit, making her inheritance a source of danger.

The official U.S. publisher synopsis introduces her half-brother Sandlin and half-sister Berea, both warriors, who accompany her in search of protection. An arranged marriage could give Hannalyn access to another mage’s stronghold while she learns to use her powers.

Her immediate challenge is practical: how do you stay alive in a world whose rules you barely understand?

A Marriage of Convenience in a Dangerous Magical World

The U.K. publisher’s description supplies additional context. Hannalyn is known as Hannah before entering Augremont, where bloodlines and magical power shape political alliances.

Her prospective husband is Malcom Peverel, the leader of an ascending house. He needs the advantages her lineage offers; she needs the protection he can provide.

That setup makes the relationship part of the survival plot. Trusting a potential husband could mean finding security, but choosing badly could deepen her vulnerability.

The premise interests me because it gives the portal crossing consequences beyond discovering magic. Hannalyn has to make decisions about power, loyalty and dependence before she has had time to understand her new life.

Hold My Spellbook Begins The Stronghold Series

Simon & Schuster lists Hold My Spellbook as Book 1 of The Stronghold.

Harris had also discussed the project before this week’s cover reveal. In an April 16 update on her official website, she said she had finished reviewing the copy-edited manuscript and was already writing another book featuring the same characters.

That gives readers a clear starting point for a new series. The sources reviewed for this announcement do not supply a sequel title or publication date.

How Harris Developed Her New Romantasy

Speaking to PEOPLE, Harris explained that the story grew from a narrative she developed in her mind while falling asleep. Over several years, she expanded the characters and adjusted the plot.

She also said her editor identified the book as portal romantasy. That detail offers an appealing glimpse into its origins: the story developed through her own creative routine before receiving its publishing label.

Why This Belongs on Fantasy Readers’ Radar

The combination of an unfamiliar world, competing magical houses and a strategic marriage gives Hold My Spellbookseveral promising sources of tension. Whether those elements deliver will be a question for the finished novel, but the announcement establishes a clear premise.
