Blumhouse is bringing three of its horror franchises to the printed page. The Purge, M3GAN and Happy Death Day are getting new comic books through a partnership with IDW Publishing’s horror imprint, IDW Dark.

The announcement gives movie fans a new way to revisit these worlds, with original stories planned rather than straightforward retellings. According to IDW’s announcement, reproduced by Capes and Tights, The Purge will launch the partnership in late 2027, with the other properties following.

For readers, the appeal is how differently these franchises might use comics. A nationwide night of violence, an unpredictable artificial intelligence and a repeating murder mystery each offer a different kind of storytelling challenge.

The late-2027 window applies to the launch with The Purge. Readers should not assume all three series will arrive together.

The Purge Comic Will Explore a New Setting

The Purge will lead the lineup, with Dan Watters writing and Juan José Ryp illustrating. Its premise remains a society that permits crime, including murder, during an annual night of sanctioned violence.

In Entertainment Weekly’s exclusive report, IDW Dark editor Heather Antos said the story would explore a town and environment the franchise has not previously visited.

That approach offers an opportunity to make the story feel distinct. A new community could bring its own tensions, loyalties and survival strategies to Purge Night.

From an editorial perspective, the most interesting possibility is how the comic handles ordinary decisions before the violence begins. Who has somewhere safe to go? Who feels responsible for a neighbor? What happens when someone’s survival depends on a person they distrust? Those are potential directions, rather than announced plot details, but they illustrate why this premise can support another story.

Tim Seeley Is Writing Happy Death Day

Tim Seeley is attached to write Happy Death Day. As Graphic Policy’s announcement coverage explains, the franchise combines a slasher mystery with a science-fiction twist: a murder victim repeatedly relives the day of their death while trying to identify the killer.

A comic could make that repetition especially effective. Similar panels could recur with a changed expression, a missing object or a newly visible clue. Readers could turn back and compare scenes in a way that rewards close attention.

That is an analysis of the format’s possibilities, not a description of the forthcoming comic. Its detailed plot has not been revealed.

Does This Mean Happy Death Day 3 Is Happening?

The comic announcement does not confirm a third movie.

Bloody Disgusting reports that Antos discussed director Christopher Landon’s plans for a possible third film so the comic could leave room for that story. The comic is not being presented as a replacement for Happy Death Day 3.

For fans, that distinction matters: a new comic is confirmed, while this announcement supplies no third-film release date.

M3GAN Is Also Joining IDW Dark

M3GAN is part of the announced lineup, although her comic’s creative team and publication date remain unannounced.

The franchise’s central idea—an artificial-intelligence doll whose protective programming becomes dangerous—offers plenty of visual potential. A comic can linger on the unsettling gap between a friendly expression and a threatening action.

My interest here is whether the story can balance menace with humor. M3GAN’s appeal depends on that combination, and the page gives creators control over how long readers sit with an apparently innocent image before discovering what it means.

For now, specific settings, supporting characters and storylines remain details to watch for in future announcements.

Why This Is Worth Watching for Horror Readers

These three properties suggest different reading experiences: dystopian survival, technology-driven horror and a looping murder mystery.

The strongest outcome would be comics that justify their format through distinctive artwork, pacing and character development. A familiar movie title can attract attention, but the reading experience will determine whether fans return for another issue.

The Purge has the clearest announced timetable, making it the first title to watch. Further announcements should clarify the other creative teams, story premises and publication schedules.

Which franchise would you most like to read as a comic: The Purge, M3GAN or Happy Death Day?
