Arnold Schwarzenegger is making his debut as a novelist with James Patterson. Their upcoming thriller, The Protector, introduces a Catholic priest whose efforts to defend his community draw him into a dangerous confrontation with criminals.
The collaboration was reported on October 6, 2026, with Publishers Weekly confirming that Little, Brown acquired North American rights. The announcement describes a story set in present-day Los Angeles, with a military veteran at its center. Publishers Weekly
When Does The Protector Come Out?
The Protector is scheduled for October 4, 2027. Little, Brown and Company’s official listing currently shows a 400-page hardcover, alongside ebook and unabridged audiobook editions. Preorders are available.
That makes this a fall 2027 release, even though the collaboration was announced in October 2026.

What Is The Protector About?
The novel follows Father Viktor Brennan, a priest at Saint Dominic’s in East Los Angeles. He creates a soup kitchen and a gym with a boxing ring while trying to shield his congregation from gang violence.
His activities attract the attention of LAPD Detective Sandra Reyes, an officer committed to following the rules. Reyes watches Brennan closely, while both keep an eye on a criminal kingpin called Cera. An innocent person caught in deadly crossfire brings questions of revenge and faith into the conflict.
The announcement adds that Brennan’s attempts to protect the parish put his own life in danger and gradually expose his mysterious past.
These details suggest a story with competing ideas about protection: Brennan’s personal responsibility to his congregation and Reyes’s responsibility to enforce the law. How those duties collide is one of the most interesting possibilities in the premise.
Why Schwarzenegger Is Writing a Novel
Schwarzenegger has already published nonfiction, including Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life and Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story. The Protector represents his move into fiction.
In PEOPLE’s announcement, Schwarzenegger said he had carried the idea for decades before finding a collaborator in Patterson. He also connected the project to the idea of service that he encountered in his Catholic upbringing.
The authors’ shared Catholic backgrounds partly inspired Brennan, according to the publisher’s announcement. That gives the priest’s vocation a meaningful connection to the collaboration, beyond the novelty of casting an action hero as a fictional religious leader.
What Makes the Premise Interesting?
A priest with a military background gives the story a built-in tension. Brennan’s experience may help him confront danger, but his vocation raises another question: what happens when protecting people begins to resemble pursuing revenge?
For me, that moral conflict is the strongest part of the announcement. An intimidating hero and a dangerous opponent can carry an action thriller, but Brennan’s obligations to his parish could give his decisions greater weight.
The soup kitchen and boxing gym also make his role tangible. He is trying to build something for the neighborhood, which gives readers a reason to care about what violence might destroy.
Those are expectations based on the announced premise. The book is still forthcoming, and its execution remains to be seen.
A New Thriller to Watch for in 2027
The Protector pairs Schwarzenegger’s long-held story idea with Patterson’s experience writing suspense. Readers interested in crime fiction, morally conflicted protagonists and the relationship between faith and violence have a clear premise to consider ahead of its October 4, 2027 release.
