Darcie Little Badger’s next fantasy novel brings ghosts, strange creatures and an approaching catastrophe into the lives of three cousins. Children of Owl is scheduled for publication on October 6, 2026, from Levine Querido, with illustrations by Abigail Rajunov. For readers looking for an autumn release that combines a supernatural mystery with family relationships, its premise offers plenty to explore.

This is a young adult contemporary fantasy, with a mobile home community at the heart of its story. The everyday world of family, work and teenage ambitions becomes entangled with something much harder to explain and potentially much more dangerous.

What Is Children of Owl About?

The announced story follows three cousins: Maisie, Joel and Verona. Each has personal concerns, but their lives overlap with the supernatural beings surrounding their trailer park.

Maisie is struggling after the death of her best friend. An encounter with Owl adds another burden: a warning of impending tragedy. Joel, a talented streamer whose judgment has landed him in trouble, faces a summer of fostering kittens. Verona wants to leave their community so badly that she is willing to take a house-sitting job in a place she knows is haunted.

Owl supplies the fourth central perspective. He is the son of Big Owl, and his connection to doom is complicated by his concern for the humans caught up in the story. The publisher’s synopsis also introduces a ghost seeking justice, a feline Animal Person and a monster intent on revenge.

That combination makes the premise especially intriguing. These characters have things to lose before the supernatural danger arrives. Saving the people around them may require confronting problems already present in their lives.

A Fantasy World Rooted in Contemporary Texas

Kirkus’s advance review identifies the setting as Mockingtown, Texas, and the protagonists as Lipan Apache cousins in the Moreno family. Their home is the Sunny Park mobile home community, where ordinary life exists alongside ghosts and unexplained phenomena.

This setting is one of the book’s most appealing announced features. Fantasy can make a familiar place feel newly uncertain. A house-sitting job becomes a possible encounter with a haunting; an animal in someone’s care may be more than it appears.

For me, that is a strong reason to watch this release. I enjoy fantasy worlds that make readers reconsider their surroundings. A neighborhood can carry as much mystery as a distant kingdom when the story gives its inhabitants enough history, secrets and conflicting needs.

Who Is Owl, and Why Does His Warning Matter?

Owl’s warning creates a question that drives the mystery: how can Maisie prevent a disaster when she does not know exactly what is coming?

According to Publishers Weekly’s advance review, Big Owl is a figure in Lipan Apache stories. Maisie’s encounter with his son draws her into several overlapping mysteries, including a ghost haunting a cousin, developments in a murder case, a missing time capsule belonging to her late friend and a foster cat behaving strangely.

My reading of this setup is that uncertainty matters as much as the threat itself. A warning gives Maisie a reason to act, but it does not automatically tell her which clue deserves attention. That leaves room for a fantasy story built around investigation, interpretation and difficult decisions.

Illustrations and Comics Are Part of the Story

Abigail Rajunov’s contribution deserves attention alongside Little Badger’s writing. Children of Owl includes full-color comic panels throughout the novel.

Kirkus describes a mixed format combining third-person narration, first-person passages presented on ruled notebook pages and illustrated comics. Publishers Weekly also notes letters and diary entries among the narrative elements.

For readers choosing between editions, the illustrated format is worth considering. The visual storytelling is a distinctive part of this release’s presentation. It also makes the book an interesting prospect for readers who enjoy novels that experiment with how a story reaches the page.

Where It Fits in Darcie Little Badger’s Work

Little Badger is a Lipan Apache writer with a PhD in oceanography. Her earlier books include Elatsoe, A Snake Falls to Earth and Sheine Lende. As her official biography explains, Elatsoe won the Locus Award for Best First Novel, while A Snake Falls to Earth received a Newbery Honor.

Readers should also distinguish this release from her existing Elatsoe books. The author’s books page explicitly identifies Sheine Lende as an Elatsoe prequel; it presents Children of Owl with its own cast and premise. The current announcement does not identify Children of Owl as another Elatsoe installment.

Fans interested in her combination of family stories, mystery and fantasy have a clear reason to investigate this new title. New readers can approach its announced premise without treating it as a numbered sequel.

Why Children of Owl Belongs on Your October Radar

The strongest hook for me is the relationship between danger and belonging. The cousins have different feelings about their lives and community, yet the coming threat gives them reasons to pay close attention to one another.

There is also an appealing range in the setup: kitten fostering, haunted houses, grief and a supernatural warning. Whether those elements come together successfully is a question for a full review, but they give this release a memorable identity.

Children of Owl arrives October 6, 2026. Readers drawn to contemporary fantasy, supernatural mysteries and illustrated YA novels should keep it on their radar.
