Travis Baldree is returning to the world of Legends & Lattes with Tales from the Territory, a collection of five short stories featuring familiar characters, fresh perspectives and another challenge for Viv’s coffee shop.
For readers wondering whether this is the next full-length novel, the answer is straightforward: it is a companion collection. Three of its five stories appear here for the first time, according to Subterranean Press’s announcement and book listing.
The release dates need a little explanation, too. The North American edition is already available, while the current UK publisher listings give October 15, 2026, for the hardback and audiobook. Earlier announcements advertised October 1.
What Is Tales from the Territory About?
Tales from the Territory expands Baldree’s cozy fantasy setting through shorter adventures involving Viv, Tandri, Thimble and Zyll. The collection moves between characters’ earlier experiences and life around the café.
That format makes sense for a world whose appeal rests so heavily on its supporting cast. A short story can give a baker, an art student or a troublesome goblin room to become the center of attention.
Rather than treating the collection as one continuous sequel, think of it as a chance to explore different corners of the Territory. The premises include a murder mystery, a baker’s search for a better home for his talents, and competition that threatens the coffee shop.
Tales from the Territory Release Dates
Here is the clearest way to distinguish the editions as of October 1, 2026:
| Edition | Publisher | Current release information |
|---|---|---|
| North American edition | Subterranean Press | Already released; confirmed available by September 14, 2026 |
| UK hardback | Tor / Pan Macmillan | October 15, 2026 |
| UK audiobook | Tor / Pan Macmillan | October 15, 2026; narrated by Travis Baldree |
Baldree’s literary agency, Zeno Agency, confirmed the North American edition was out in its September 14 announcement. That establishes availability by that date; it does not establish September 14 as the exact publication date.
For the UK hardback, Pan Macmillan’s current listing gives October 15 and a length of 224 pages. The edition includes full-page color illustrations and illustrated endpapers.
The UK audiobook listing also gives October 15 and confirms that Baldree narrates it himself.
Because older announcements still show October 1, readers should check the listing for the particular edition and territory they plan to buy.
Which Stories Are Included?
The collection contains these five stories, in the following order. The spoiler-light descriptions below follow the publishers’ announced premises.
1. “Goblins & Greatcoats”
Zyll becomes involved in a murder mystery at an inn, with mistaken identity and her enthusiasm for stealing cutlery complicating the situation.
2. “Just a Thimbleful”
Thimble’s story explores the baker’s path away from an unhappy household and toward a place where his talents can flourish.
3. “Pages to Fill”
An act of mercy brings Viv an unexpected discovery during her life as a warrior.
4. “Mirograph”
A younger Tandri works with a university professor on a project connecting art and science.
5. “Cavaliers & Coffees”
Viv and the café crew face a business rival that copies their ideas and undercuts their prices. This is the longest story in the collection.
Together, these premises offer several entry points into the same world: mystery, creative ambition, fresh starts and the work of keeping a small business alive.
Legends & Lattes Reading Order
For first-time readers, my recommendation is to follow the main books’ publication order, then read the collection:
| Order | Book | Original publication year | Place in the series |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Legends & Lattes | 2022 | Introduces Viv’s coffee shop and its community |
| 2 | Bookshops & Bonedust | 2023 | A prequel featuring a younger Viv |
| 3 | Brigands & Breadknives | 2025 | A later adventure centered on bookseller Fern |
| 4 | Tales from the Territory | 2026 | Five companion stories set in the same world |
Zeno’s author bibliography identifies the three novels and the 2026 short-story collection. The order above is an editorial recommendation for newcomers.
Starting with Legends & Lattes introduces the café and its characters before the later books expand their histories. That gives the collection’s shifts in perspective more context.
Can You Read Bookshops & Bonedust First?
Yes. Its main story takes place twenty years before Legends & Lattes, and Pan Macmillan describes it as a standalone cozy fantasy adventure.
If you prefer to follow Viv’s life chronologically, start with Bookshops & Bonedust, continue with Legends & Lattes, and then read Brigands & Breadknives.
The collection is easiest to treat separately. Its stories cover different moments, so placing the entire volume at one point in a chronological sequence would be misleading.
Where Does Brigands & Breadknives Fit?
Brigands & Breadknives follows Fern as she moves to Thune to establish a bookshop beside an old friend’s café. Tor’s official synopsis then sends her into an adventure involving a legendary warrior and an imprisoned goblin.
Reading it after the first two novels gives you the background to both Fern and the community she rejoins.
Should You Read the Novels Before the Collection?
I would start with Legends & Lattes. Although individual short stories offer their own premises, several involve characters and a business that readers first encounter in the novel.
You do not need to reorganize the whole series around these stories. Reading the collection after the three novels is a convenient way to return to the world with the broadest context.
For established fans, the attraction is clear: Thimble and Tandri receive more attention, Zyll brings a mystery into the mix, and Viv’s café faces another practical problem. Tales from the Territory gives readers more time with the people who make this fantasy world feel like somewhere worth returning to.
